Market Overview:
The global indirect ophthalmoscope market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The increasing prevalence of eye disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy, peripheral neovascularization, pediatric retinal repairs and lattice degeneration is driving the growth of the global indirect ophthalmoscope market. In addition, the increasing demand for technologically advanced indirect ophthalmoscopes is also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, the global indirect ophthalmoscope market can be segmented into diabetic retinopathy, peripheral neovascularization, pediatric retinal repairs and lattice degeneration. The diabetic retinopathy segment is expected to account for a major share of this market in 2018 owing to its high prevalence across all regions. On the basis of application, this market can be divided into clinics, hospitals and others (including research institutes and academic institutions). The clinics segment accounted for a major share in 2017 and is projected to dominate this market duringthe forecast period owing to rising demand for eye care services across all regions.
Product Definition:
An indirect ophthalmoscope is a magnifying instrument that allows the examiner to see the retina and other structures at the back of the eye. The indirect ophthalmoscope consists of a binocular eyepiece and an illumination system. The examiner looks into one eyepiece while light is directed into the other eyepiece, which reflects off of objects in the eye and is focused onto the retina. This type of ophthalmoscope is especially useful for examining patients who have cataracts or who are unable to keep their eyes open for long periods because it does not require that they keep their eyes fixed on a target.
Diabetic Retinopathy:
Diabetic retinopathy is a chronic eye disease that develops when blood sugar (glucose) levels are too high and the small blood vessels in the retina get damaged. The disease may develop at any age but most commonly affects people aged 40-60 years. It is estimated that around 2 million people in America have diabetic retinopathy, which accounts for 10% of all cases diagnosed among patients suffering from diabetes mellitus.
Peripheral Neovascularization:
Peripheral neovascularization is the formation of new blood vessels from existing ones that supplies an increase in amount of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. It helps in improving vision by increasing the blood flow to the retina. The process also helps in removing waste products such as urea, uric acid, and bilirubin from body cells.
Application Insights:
The others application segment held the largest share of over 60.0% in 2017. The other applications include diabetic retinopathy, neovascularization, pediatric retinal repairs and lattice degeneration. Diabetic retinopathy is expected to be the fastest growing application segment owing to increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus across the globe and introduction of advanced products for early detection & treatment such as laser photocoagulation systems with indirect ophthalmoscopes for self-treatment at home by patients with diabetes.
Hospital is expected to be one of the fastest-growing segments due to factors such as increasing number of diabetic patients visiting hospitals due to complications arising from diabetes such as cataract surgery requiring an operating microscope, equipment availability and skilled manpower which encourages market growth in this region especially during forecast years 2018 through 2030 when compared with other regions where these products are already being used extensively like North America.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. This can be attributed to increasing R&D investments by major companies, high adoption of technologically advanced devices, and rising prevalence of ophthalmic disorders. Moreover, presence of a large number of global players in this region increases the availability and accessibility of these instruments across the globe.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to factors such as improving healthcare infrastructure & affordability leading to increased penetration rate for indirect ophthalmoscope devices among physicians in this region. In addition, growing awareness about various types of eye diseases coupled with rise in medical tourism will boost regional growth during the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing prevalence of eye diseases: The increasing prevalence of various eye diseases is one of the key growth drivers for the indirect ophthalmoscope market. According to a study by The National Eye Institute, around 2 million people in the U.S. are affected by glaucoma and this number is expected to reach 3 million by 2020. Furthermore, diabetic retinopathy affects nearly 7 million Americans and it is estimated that this number will increase to 11 million by 2030. This growing prevalence of various eye diseases is anticipated to drive the demand for indirect ophthalmoscopes in the coming years.
- Rising geriatric population: The global geriatric population is increasing at a rapid pace and this trend is expected to continue in the future as well, owing to advancements in healthcare technologies and rising awareness about health issues among seniors worldwide. This growing geriatric population is likely to create significant opportunities for indirect ophthalmoscope manufacturers in the coming years as they are more prone to develop age-related eye disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc., which can be diagnosed with an indirect ophthalmoscope effectively .
