Market Overview:
The global internal radiotherapy devices market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing incidence of cancer, technological advancements in radiotherapy devices, and rising demand for minimally invasive treatments. The global internal radiotherapy devices market is segmented by type into HDR afterloaders and PDR afterloaders. The HDR afterloader segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6% from 2018 to 2030, while the PDR afterloader segment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% from 2018 to 2030. On the basis of application, the global internal radiotherapy devices market is divided into prostate cancer, gynecological cancer, breast cancer, and other applications. The prostate cancer segment accounted for the largest share (36%) of the global internal radiotherapy devices market in 2017 and it is projected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period owing to rising incidence rates globally. However, with increasing awareness about early detection and treatment options for various types of cancers among women across regions such as Asia Pacific and Latin America;the gynecological cancer segmentis projectedto registerthe highestCAGRof 7%.
Product Definition:
Internal radiotherapy devices are used to deliver radiation therapy directly to the tumor. This can be done by inserting a device into the tumor or by implanting a radioactive source near the tumor. Internal radiotherapy is used to treat many types of cancer, including brain tumors, liver tumors, and pancreatic tumors.
HDR Afterloaders:
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Afterloaders as it is commonly known, is a type of plastic used in the manufacturing of HDR afterloaders. It has high mechanical strength and low density making it ideal for use in medical devices.
PDR Afterloaders:
PDR Afterloaders is a device used to reduce the dose of radiation to the heart and lungs. It works by reducing the amount of x-ray exposure to patients, as it was shown to decrease Varian's SARS-CoV-2 treatment dosage by 50%.
The market for PDR afterloaders is expected to grow at a lucrative rate during the forecast period owing its benefits in reducing radiation damage which leads towards reduced side effects and improved effectiveness.
Application Insights:
The other application segment includes lung cancer, bone metastasis, head and neck cancer, skin metastasis and others. Breast cancer is estimated to be the fastest-growing application segment over the forecast period owing to increasing awareness about early detection of breast tumor. HDR afterloaders are used for external beam radiation therapy in the treatment of breast carcinoma.
External beam radiation therapy is used for treating a large number of patients with breast carcinoma as it allows precise dosage to targeted areas which cannot be achieved with internal radiation therapy devices such as brachytherapy machines or image-guided robots due to their size constraints. HDR afterloaders can also treat prostate cancer since they have been designed specifically for this purpose along with being able to deliver proton beams which are highly effective in killing prostate tumor cells without causing any damage on surrounding healthy tissues resulting in fewer side effects compared to conventional treatments such as robot-assisted EBRT or LDRT using cesium rays.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to the presence of well-established healthcare infrastructure, high adoption rate of technologically advanced products and increasing government initiatives. Moreover, rising incidence rates of cancer is also expected to boost demand for radiotherapy devices in this region. For instance, as per American Cancer Society (ACS), Inc., around 2 million new cases will be diagnosed in the U.S.
Asia Pacific is expected to grow at a lucrative CAGR over the forecast period due to factors such as improving healthcare facilities & infrastructure coupled with growing awareness about available treatment options especially for off-shore diseases like breast cancer or brain tumor which are not so common here than other parts of world thus creating huge market potentials for HDR afterloaders system.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of cancer: The global incidence of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate. This is expected to drive the demand for internal radiotherapy devices in the coming years.
- Technological advancements: The internal radiotherapy devices market is witnessing rapid technological advancements, which is resulting in the development of innovative and advanced products. This is likely to boost the growth of this market in the near future.
- Rising awareness about radiation therapy: There has been a rise in awareness about radiation therapy among patients and healthcare professionals alike over the past few years. This is likely to propel demand for internal radiotherapy devices in the coming years.
