Market Overview:
The global isobutanol market is expected to reach USD XX million by 2030, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. Isobutanol >99.5% and isoButanol >99.8% are the two major types of isobutanol products available in the market. The paints & coatings application segment dominates the global isobutanol market, followed by lubricant additives and other applications segments respectively. North America dominates the global isobutanol market, followed by Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East & Africa respectively.
Product Definition:
Isobutanol (CAS 78-83-1) is an organic compound with the formula CH3CH2CH2OH. It is a colorless, flammable liquid. Isobutanol occurs naturally in plants but can also be produced synthetically. It is used as an industrial solvent and as a fuel additive.
Isobutanol >99.5%:
Isobutanol is a chemical, which is also known as butyl alcohol. It has a similar structure to that of ethanol, however the carbon chain in it's molecule is only half the length. Isobutanol has many uses and applications in various industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food industry among others.
Isobutanol >99.8%:
Isobutanol is a chemical, which is produced by the catalytic oxidation of ethanol. Isobutanol has a similar structure to that of ethanol but different molecular weight. The difference in molecular weight between the two compounds accounts for its ability to be absorbed more easily by fatty tissues and used as an energy source when compared with ethanol.
Application Insights:
Paints & coatings was the leading application segment and accounted for over 40% of total market volume in 2017. Rising construction activities in emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico are expected to drive product demand in this application segment. In addition, growing environmental concerns regarding VOC emissions from paints & coatings applications is likely to propel demand for isobutanol-based products as an alternative fuel additive.
Isobutanol-based additives are used as a substitute for mineral spirits due to their superior properties including low toxicity and non-flammability which makes them suitable for use in lubricant additives especially at high temperatures where flammable liquids would normally be used. The other major application includes its usage as a solvent or diluent in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food processing industries among others where it finds limited scope owing to its higher boiling point compared with petroleum distillates or other organic solvents commonly used across these sectors globally.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the largest regional market over the forecast period owing to high product demand from various application industries. The growth of construction, automotive and manufacturing sectors in developing economies including China, India, Indonesia and Thailand are anticipated to drive product consumption in Asia Pacific region.
The increasing number of paints & coatings manufacturing companies coupled with rising investments for production expansion is projected to augment industry growth over the coming years. Growing industrialization along with rapid urbanization has resulted in growing infrastructure spending which will further propel product demand across several end-use applications such as polyurethane foam insulation and adhesives for flooring systems etc.
North America was estimated as a major market accounting for over 25% of global volume share on account of growing consumer disposable income levels coupled with an increase in residential construction activities post-recession are expected to positively impact industry growth across this region. Moreover, presence of key manufacturers such as Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and solvents
- Growing demand for biofuels as a replacement for gasoline
- Rising investment in research and development of new isobutanol production technologies
- Stringent environmental regulations to promote the use of renewable resources
- Technological advancements that improve the efficiency of isobutanol production
