Market Overview:
The global isotropic PET film market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for food and beverage packaging, chemical packaging, pharmaceuticals packaging, cosmetics and personal care products packaging, and others applications. In terms of type, the isotropic PET film market is segmented into up to 15 microns, 15-20 microns, and above 20 microns. The up to 15 micron segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global isotropic PET film market in 2018. This can be attributed to its low cost as well as its suitability for a wide range of applications such as food and beverage packaging, chemical packing etc.
Product Definition:
IsoPET is an isotropic PET film, which means that it has the same properties in all directions. It is important for medical applications because it can be cut into very thin pieces without losing its strength, making it ideal for use in implants and other medical devices.
Up to 15 Microns:
15 Microns is the thickness of a single layer of polymer molecules. The higher the number, the thinner the film and vice versa. Isotropic PET (ITP) films have been developed to overcome limitations associated with existing polyester films namely high shrinkage and low dimensional stability. ITP has better optical properties than standard polyester owing to lower absorption coefficient for its layers as compared to that of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).
15 to 20 Micros:
15 to 20 Micros is the range of molecular weight that can be achieved with a single drop of water. It has been used as a standard measure for the thickness of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films in packaging applications.
Application Insights:
The others application segment accounted for the largest revenue share in 2016 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing demand for packaging solutions from various industries, such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care products.
Food and beverage was the largest application segment in 2016 accounting for a market share of more than 40%. Increasing consumption of packaged foods including ready-to-eat meals, frozen meals, snacks among other items has led to an increased demand for packaging solutions that are lightweight but durable. The growing food processing industry across developing countries including China India Indonesia Mexico Brazil Thailand Argentina will boost product demand over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global isotropic PET film market in 2017. The region will retain its dominant position over the forecast period as well until 2030. This can be attributed to increasing R&D activities and technological advancements in end-use industries such as healthcare, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness significant growth over the coming years owing to rising product demand from various end-use industries such as electronics manufacturing, medical devices manufacturing.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for lightweight and high-performance materials in the automotive and aerospace industries
- Growing demand from medical device and healthcare sectors
- Rising popularity of PET film in food packaging industry
- Emerging applications of PET film in solar energy sector
- Proliferation of digital printing technology
