Market Overview:
The global launch vehicle market is expected to grow from USD 9.8 billion in 2018 to USD 15.5 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth of the global launch vehicle market can be attributed to the increasing demand for commercial and government space applications, rising investments in space exploration programs, and growing number of launches worldwide. However, the high cost associated with the development and deployment of launch vehicles may restrain the growth of this market during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
A launch vehicle is a rocket-powered missile or spacecraft used to carry a payload from Earth's surface into space. A launch vehicle typically consists of three stages: the first stage carries the payload and propellant tanks; the second stage provides propulsion for the first stage and also carries tanks for propellant and/or oxidizer; and the third stage provides further propulsion.
Light Rocket:
Light rocket is also known as a reusable launch vehicle (RLV) or Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV). It is an unmanned spacecraft which is launched into space by using different types of rockets. The lightest type of these vehicles can carry up to 1,000 kg of payload into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which can be used for delivering satellites and other small payloads.
Heavy Rocket:
Heavy rockets are used to carry payloads of up to 500 tons into space. They are generally used for satellite launches, but they can also be used for launching probes and crewed missions into orbit around the Moon, Mars or Venus. Heavy rockets have been replacing smaller launch vehicles such as ballistic missiles in terms of their capability to deliver heavy payloads into space due to lower Earth orbit inclination and higher escape velocity.
Application Insights:
The commercial segment held the largest share of more than 60.0% in 2017. The growth can be attributed to the growing need for launching satellites into space for providing communication services and conducting scientific research. Communication satellites constitute a major share in the global launch vehicle market as they provide various communication services, such as television broadcasting, internet access, and mobile communications. Moreover, these vehicles are used for launching payloads that conduct earth observation missions and deliver supplies to the ISS (International Space Station).
The government segment is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to increasing demand from countries including U.S.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global launch vehicle market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period as well owing to several initiatives undertaken by space organizations and government agencies for developing space technology. For instance, NASA has been working on a series of robotic missions under its Discovery Program that are intended for exploring different areas of the solar system such as comet Tempel-1 flyby, Jupiter's moon Europa orbiter and Saturn's moon Titan lander/lander combo mission.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness significant growth over the next eight years owing to increasing government spending on space programs and commercial satellite launches. In addition, growing demand from military & defense sector for launching satellites into orbits beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO) will drive regional growth during this period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for small satellites: The market for small satellites is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 11% from 2016 to 2021. This is primarily due to the increasing demand from government and commercial sectors for earth observation, communication, and navigation services.
- Growing investments in space exploration: Governments and private organizations are investing heavily in space exploration programs, which is expected to drive the growth of the launch vehicle market during the forecast period. For instance, NASA plans to invest billion in its Space Launch System (SLS) program by 2020.
- Proliferation of new launch vehicles: A number of new launch vehicles are being developed by private companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin LLC., which is expected to increase competition in the market and drive down prices during the forecast period. For instance, SpaceX has announced plans to develop a heavy-lift rocket called Falcon Heavy that will be capable of carrying payloads up to 54 metric tons into orbit.
