Market Overview:
The global liquid hydrogen market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for hydrogen as a fuel source in transportation and electronics applications. Additionally, the growing demand for hydrogen as an industrial feedstock is also contributing to the growth of the market. However, high production costs are restraining the growth of this market. On basis of type, steam methane reforming (SMR) accounted for majority share of global liquid hydrogen market in 2017 and is projected to maintain its dominance during forecast period 2018-2030 owing to its low production cost as compared with electrolysis process. On basis on application, transportation sector dominated global liquid hydrogen market with highest share in 2017 and is projected witness highest CAGR over next 10 years owing rising demand for fuel cell vehicles across globe coupled with stringent emission norms by regulatory authorities such as EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and CARB (California Air Resources Board).
Product Definition:
Liquid hydrogen is a fuel used in liquid-fuel rockets. It is the lightest element and therefore provides the highest specific impulse or "thrust per pound of propellant" of any practical rocket fuel. Liquid hydrogen is also a clean and efficient fuel, emitting very little pollution when used.
Steam Methane Reforming (SMR):
The global steam methane reforming process is used to generate hydrogen and methanol. The SMR process has a growth factor of about 1.5 times as compared to the conventional H2/CO2 method, which makes it more attractive for use in liquid hydrogen production.
SMR uses pure water as a raw material along with natural gas or coal bed methane (CBM).
Electrolysis:
Electrolysis is a chemical process used for the production of hydrogen and oxygen from water. Electrolysis can be performed at various temperatures depending on the application. The most common electrolysis applications include residential & commercial electricity generation, fuel cells, hydrogenation of organic substances in food processing industry and metal reduction in mining sector.
Application Insights:
Transportation was the dominant application segment in the global liquid hydrogen market, accounting for over 60% of total volume in 2017. Liquid hydrogen is used to propel vehicles at high speeds by replacing gasoline with it. The transportation application is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to its wide scope as a fuel additive and refueler for both commercial and passenger vehicles on account of its clean combustion quality along with superior performance characteristics when compared with other alternative fuels such as diesel or gasoline.
Liquid hydrogen also finds applications in space exploration where it is used as an important component for maintaining equipment reliability and durability due to its freezing point which makes it suitable for use in spacesuits, space suits cooling systems, deep-space habitat air conditioners, life support systems & robotic spacecraft propellant tanks among others.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the leading revenue contributor in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing an increasing demand for LHR gas across key industries such as electronics, refining, petrochemicals, and others. China is projected to remain a major market owing to its growing industrial sector along with technological advancements in various end-use industries.
The presence of numerous refineries including Saudi Arabia’s largest state owned oil company Saudi Aramco will boost industry growth further due to SMR projects being undertaken by them in partnership with LNG carriers such as Qatargas and Summerfield (FZ). In addition, factors such as favorable government policies supporting SMR technology are anticipated to drive regional market growth over the forecast period.
North America emerged as one of the prominent consumers of liquid hydrogen on account of high product demand from electronic devices manufacturing sector particularly in U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for fuel cells and hydrogen vehicles
- Growing demand from the chemical and petrochemical industries
- Rising investment in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power
- Proliferation of small-scale liquefaction plants to meet localized demand
- Development of new applications for liquid hydrogen, such as storage of energy from intermittent renewables
