Market Overview:
The global marine low sulphur fuel oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the stringent environmental regulations by various governments across the globe for reducing emissions from ships, and also the increasing demand for low sulphur fuel oil from shipping companies in order to meet these regulations. Based on type, ultra-low sulfur fuel oil is expected to account for a major share of the global marine low sulphur fuel oil market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its ability to reduce emissions significantly as compared with other types of fuels available in the market. Based on application, bulk carriers are expected to account for a major share of the global marine low sulphur fuel oil market during the forecast period. This can be attributed mainly due to their large size and high consumption of fuels as compared with other types of vessels.
Product Definition:
Marine low sulphur fuel oil is a type of fuel oil that has been specifically designed for marine use and has a lower sulphur content than other types of fuel oil. This makes it less harmful to the environment and helps to reduce air pollution from ships.
Ultra-low Sulfur Fuel Oil:
ULSFO is a special fuel oil, which has been developed by the marine industry to meet stringent environmental regulations. It contains very low levels of sulfur and other harmful components. The product was created as an alternative to diesel in order to reduce the amount of SOx released into the atmosphere during combustion. ULSFOs are produced from vegetable oils or animal fats with high content of fatty acids, glycerin and moisture content ranging from 40% - 70%.
Very-low Sulfur Fuel Oil:
Very-low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO) is a special type of marine diesel oil, which contains less than 10% of the Sulphur content. It has been designed to meet the specifications set by U.S. Coast Guard for use in vessels operating exclusively in inland or coastal water and that do not require more than 15 degrees (F) temperature rise above freezing point during operation.
Application Insights:
Oil tankers and bulk carriers were the major application segments in the market. These vessels are used to transport oil products including fuel, lubricants and chemicals on a long-distance voyage. The general cargo segment includes liners that transport goods other than oil products. General cargo ships make use of low sulfur fuel as they do not require frequent stops for loading and unloading purposes owing to their longer travel distances. Container ships are used to transport containers on international trade activities such as imports & exports between countries. Low sulfur fuels help container ships operate more efficiently, which helps them travel longer distances without refuelling or resupply operations at sea ports or offshore facilities.
The demand for LSFO is expected to increase over the forecast period due largely to its usage in various applications including power generation plants, industrial manufacturing units along with domestic consumers across several end-use industries globally mainly in North America.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific is expected to be the largest market for low sulphur fuel oil over the forecast period. The region has been a major producer and consumer of petroleum products including LSOF Oils. Increasing population in Asia Pacific, especially in China and India coupled with rising living standards have led to an increase in maritime activities resulting into increased demand for LSOF oils across the globe.
The growing trade between Asia Pacific economies and other regions has resulted into increasing demand for containers, which will further drive product consumption across various industries such as food & beverage, chemicals, automotive among others. In addition increasing government regulations regarding sulfur content in crude oil due to environmental effects are anticipated to propel market growth over the coming years.
Growth Factors:
- Stringent environmental regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for reducing the sulphur content in marine fuels from 3.5% to 0.5% by 2020 will drive the demand for low sulphur fuel oil
- The global trade volume is expected to grow which will subsequently increase the demand for marine low sulphur fuel oil
- Increasing number of cruise ships and container vessels are likely to use low sulphur fuel oil as a compliance measure
- Rising awareness among ship owners about the benefits of using low Sulphur Fuel Oil such as reduced emissions and improved engine performance is likely to propel market growth
