Market Overview:
The global marine SCR catalyst market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for cleaner and fuel-efficient ships across the globe. In terms of type, honeycomb catalyst is expected to lead the market during the forecast period, followed by plate catalyst and corrugated catalyst. Honeycomb catalysts are more efficient than other types of catalysts as they have a large surface area that helps in better contact with exhaust gases. They are also less susceptible to fouling and degradation, which makes them ideal for use in marine applications.
Product Definition:
A Marine SCR Catalyst is a device used to convert harmful emissions from ships into less harmful substances. It works by breaking down the pollutants in the exhaust gas into nitrogen and water vapor. The importance of Marine SCR Catalysts is that they help reduce air pollution and improve air quality.
Honeycomb Catalyst:
Honeycomb catalysts are solid-state catalysts, which have a porous structure and can be manufactured by using various raw materials such as silica, alumina and ceramics. Honeycomb catalyst has an average pore size of about 5 to 200 nm. It is usually produced by hydrothermal synthesis or impregnation methods.
Plate Catalyst:
Plate catalyst is a type of chemical reaction catalyst that is made up of several small particles held together by ionic or covalent bonds. The plate can be made from different materials such as platinum, ruthenium, palladium and iridium. These catalysts are used in the form of powder for various applications including desulphurization and de-oiling operations in petroleum refining.
Application Insights:
The tanker application segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 40% in 2017. Marine SCR catalytic converters are installed on board tankers to reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). Converter is mounted at the rear portion of each stack, usually near the chimney, and exhaust gases from engine room are fed into it. The product installation on board these ships provides long-term stability as well as improves fuel efficiency by reducing exhaust gas recirculation.
Ro-ro ship application segment accounted for a significant market share in terms of demand in 2017 owing to increasing utilization of Ro-ro ships for transport between countries across various regions including Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. Growing global trade activities coupled with favorable government regulations promoting employment generation has led to increased construction spending within developing economies such as China India Japan South Korea Singapore Thailand etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to several emerging economies, including China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam. These countries are rapidly expanding their maritime industries owing to growing trade activities with other nations across the globe. Moreover, increasing foreign investments in these economies are also contributing toward growth of marine industry in this region.
The Asia Pacific regional market includes major ports such as Singapore Port Corporation; Hong Kong port; Busan port (South Korea); Shanghai port (China); Darwin Port Authority (Australia) and Kaohsiung Harbor Consortium(Taiwan). Increasing demand for efficient transportation facilities coupled with rising number of shipbuilding projects along coastal areas will drive industry expansion over next eight years or so.
Europe was estimated at USD X billion in 2017.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for marine vessels due to the growth of maritime trade and globalization
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using SCR catalysts in marine vessels among ship owners and operators
- Stringent environmental regulations for controlling emissions from ships worldwide
- Technological advancements in SCR catalyst technology that improve performance and reduce costs
- Growing demand for low-emission shipping fuels such as LNG
