Market Overview:
The global marine turbochargers market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for maritime transportation and rising awareness about fuel-efficiency measures among ship owners and operators. The global marine turbochargers market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is segmented into low-speed engines, medium-speed engines, and high-speed engines. Low-speed engine turbochargers are used in vessels with propulsion power ratings up to 1 MW; medium-speed engine turbochargers are used in vessels with propulsion power ratings between 1 MW and 10 MW; while high speed engine turbochargers are used in vessels with propulsion power ratings above 10 MW. On the basis of application, the market is divided into naval vessels, cargo ships, passenger vessels,,and others (including dredgers,,offshore support boats,,and icebreakers). Geographically,.themarketis segmentedin North America,.Latin America,.Europe,.Asia Pacific.,and Middle East & Africa.
Product Definition:
A marine turbocharger is a type of turbocharger specifically designed for use in marine applications. Marine turbochargers are typically more rugged than other types of turbochargers, and they are often equipped with features that make them resistant to corrosion and damage from water and salt.
For Low-speed Engines:
For low-speed engines, it is a type of marine diesel engine with an output between 80 and 1,500 rpm. They are mainly used in small boats that have a maximum speed of less than 25 knots. For low-speed engines, it has two major requirements: firstly the combustion must be at too high a temperature for the fuel to burn (so called premixing) and secondly there must be sufficient air supply for efficient operation (i.e., blower).
For Medium-speed Engines:
For medium-speed engines, the term refers to marine propulsion systems with a power output between 1.5 and 3 kW which are used for inland water and coastal shipping. For low speed (less than 5 knots), refer to slow speed engine; whereas, for high speeds (more than 25 knots) refer to fast speed engine category.
Application Insights:
The demand for marine turbochargers is expected to be driven by the growth in shipbuilding activities across various regions coupled with rising demand for efficient engines. The cargo ships segment accounted for the largest market share of over 40% in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period.
Passenger vessels are projected to witness significant growth at a CAGR of XX% from 2018 to 2030 owing to increasing leisure travel activities across several countries including China, Japan, Germany and France. In addition, growing tourism industry along with cruise ships will drive product demand in passenger vessel application during the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to some of the largest economies, such as China, India, Japan and South Korea. Increasing demand for marine turbochargers from these countries coupled with growing offshore activities in this region will drive growth.
The Asia Pacific regional market was followed by Europe that accounted for a share of more than 20% in terms of revenue in 2017 owing to high demand from recreational vessels including yachts and fishing boats. North America also contributed significantly towards overall industry growth owing to increasing focus on fuel efficiency by manufacturers operating within this region which resulted into higher sales volume of marine turbochargers units across all applications. However, stringent regulations regarding carbon emissions coupled with increasing emphasis on reducing weight are anticipated to reduce engine size thus affecting product sales volumes over the next eight years thereby hampering regional growth prospects during the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for fuel-efficient ships
- Growing popularity of LNG as a marine fuel
- Proliferation of hybrid and electric vessels
- Stringent environmental regulations
- Technological advancements
