The global medical inhaled nitric oxide market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, the market is segmented into 800 ppm, 100 ppm, and others. On the basis of application, it is divided into near-term and pre-term infants with PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension), children and adult ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), other diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), neonatal sepsis/meningitis/encephalitis etc., cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy etc., cardiac patients etc., pregnant women with preeclampsia etc., burn victims etc.

Global Medical Inhaled Nitric Oxide Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Medical Inhaled Nitric Oxide is a gas that is used to help improve blood flow and oxygen levels in the body. It can be used to help treat conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension.

800 ppm:

800 ppm is the concentration of nitric oxide in medical inhaled air. It is a colorless gas with a pungent odor. 800 ppm can be produced by both natural and artificial sources, however, most of the nitric oxide used in medicine comes from natural sources such as plants or animals (anaerobic decomposition). The other source includes chemical synthesis using various chemicals such as sodium nitrite, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid.

100 ppm:

100 ppm is the concentration of nitric oxide in medical inhaled and it's used as a oxidizing agent for tissue oxygenation. It has wide range of applications such as cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, treatment of respiratory failure, emergency medicine, etc. Inhaled nitric oxide is commercially available in two forms: 100% (oxygen-free) and 80% (oxygen). The product name comes from its therapeutic application which provides 100% O2 saturation.

Application Insights:

On the basis of application, the global medical inhalation nitric oxide market is segmented into near-term and pre-term infants PPHN, children and adult ARDS, other diseases. Near-term infants with pneumonia is expected to be one of the fastest growing segments over the forecast period owing to increasing incidence rates of PPHN in neonates. According to a study conducted by CDC in 2012, it was estimated that around 1 out of 5 hospitalized neonates developed pneumonia during their stay in an intensive care unit (ICU). This rate was even higher for African American and Native American babies. In addition, high prevalence of chronic lung diseases such as asthma among children coupled with rising number of emergency department visits due to respiratory infections are also anticipated fuel demand from this segment over the forecast period.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period as well owing to factors such as favorable reimbursement policies, rising healthcare expenditure, and increasing awareness about chronic respiratory diseases. Moreover, technological advancements coupled with high R&D investment by companies are also driving growth in this region. For instance, In April 2016; GlaxoSmithKline invested USD X million for a research partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for development of inhaled nitric oxide therapy for children's asthma.

Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the fastest-growing regional market from 2018 to 2030 due to various initiatives undertaken by governments and private organizations aimed at increasing awareness regarding PPHN diagnosis & treatment options especially among pediatric population.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing incidence of respiratory diseases: The global prevalence of respiratory diseases is increasing due to the changing lifestyle and environmental factors. This is expected to drive the demand for medical inhaled nitric oxide in the coming years.
  • Growing awareness about benefits of medical inhaled nitric oxide: There is a growing awareness among people about the benefits of using medical inhaled nitric oxide, which is likely to boost the market growth in the near future.
  • Technological advancements in inhalers: The technological advancements in inhalers are providing better patient compliance and efficacy, thus propelling the market growth.
  • Rising number of hospitals and clinics: The number of hospitals and clinics across globe is rising, which is anticipated to create lucrative opportunities for market players operating in this space.
