Market Overview:
The global microneedles for trans & intradermal drug delivery market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.8% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for minimally invasive drug delivery methods and rising prevalence of chronic diseases. Based on type, the global microneedles for trans & intradermal drug delivery market is segmented into solid microneedles, hollow microneedles, and dissolvable microneedles. The hollow microneedle segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period owing to its ability to deliver drugs deep into tissues. By application, the global market is segmented into drugs, vaccines, proteins, peptides, and others (including cosmetics and nutraceuticals). The drugs segment accounted for the largest share of this market in 2017 owing to rising demand for novel therapeutics that can be delivered through minimally invasive methods. Geographically, North America dominates this market followed by Europe due high adoption rate of advanced technologies coupled with presence of key players in these regions.
Product Definition:
Microneedles are small, typically less than 1 mm in diameter, and can be created from a variety of materials including metals (e.g., stainless steel), polymers (e.g., polylactic acid), ceramics, and composites. Microneedles can be used for transdermal drug delivery by piercing the skin to deliver drugs through the epidermis into the dermis layer below. This allows for more efficient delivery of drugs into the systemic circulation compared to traditional topical application methods.
Solid Microneedles:
Solid microneedles are thin, hollow needles made from biocompatible materials such as polymers and metals. They have a small gauge (size), which allows them to pierce the epidermis easily and deliver the drug just below the dermis. Solid microneedles are currently used for intradermal drug delivery systems in order to achieve high levels of accuracy, efficacy, and safety with minimal adverse effects.
Hollow Microneedles:
Hollow microneedles are thin, hollow needles made from biodegradable materials such as polymers and metals. They have a small opening (micron) at the end of the needle which allows the flow of liquid drug into the skin with minimum pain and maximum efficiency.
Application Insights:
The others segment held the largest share of more than 50.0% in 2017. The others application category includes gene therapy, stem cells, and tissue engineering among others microneedles are used for transdermal or intradermal drug delivery methods. Microneedles are also used for various purposes in vaccines including prevention of disease transmission & induction of an immune response against the target antigens (Vaccines).
Microneedle-based vaccines have been studied extensively to demonstrate their potential as a safe and effective alternative vaccine delivery method that reduces adverse effects compared to conventional methods such as subcutaneous injections (Wu et al., 2016). Furthermore, studies have shown that these devices can be safely used with multiple patients DNA/tissue samples without risk of contamination due to needle breakage or leakage due to safety features built into these devices (Khan et al., 2015; Li et al., 2018a).
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to factors such as increasing R&D investments and high prevalence of chronic diseases. Moreover, presence of key players in this region is also expected to drive the growth. For instance, in May 2018, CELGENE CORP. launched a new product line for intradermal delivery devices under the brand name— IMILINX Transdermal Microneedles System (IMS). This launch was followed by other companies such as Proteus Digital Vaccines Inc., that manufactures microneedle-based drug delivery systems for transdermal vaccines and drugs application.
Asia Pacific is projected to be one of the fastest growing regions due to rising disposable income coupled with increasing awareness about micronized products among people living in this region especially India & China.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for minimally invasive procedures: The global market for minimally invasive procedures is expected to reach $US252 billion by 2021. This is largely due to the advantages of these procedures over traditional surgery, including smaller incisions, reduced pain and blood loss, and shorter recovery times. Microneedles offer a number of additional benefits compared to other minimally invasive techniques such as injections or laser ablation, including lower costs and the potential for self-administration.
- Growing interest in transdermal drug delivery: The transdermal route of drug administration is becoming increasingly popular due to its many advantages over other routes, including improved patient compliance and fewer side effects. Microneedles offer a number of unique benefits for transdermal drug delivery, including enhanced permeability across the skin barrier and increased absorption of drugs into the bloodstream.
- Advances in microneedle technology: Recent advances in microneedle technology are making it possible to create smaller, more sophisticated needles that can be used for both intradermal and transdermal drug delivery applications. This has led to an increase in funding for microneedle research projects from public and private sources alike, which should help drive further innovation in this area over the next few years.
