Market Overview:
The global mineral lubricant market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for mineral lubricants from various end-use industries, such as machinery & equipment, automotive, and others. In terms of type, the 3# segment is expected to lead the global mineral lubricant market during the forecast period due to its high demand from end-use industries. However, the 5# segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than other types during the forecast period owing to its growing demand from developing countries in Asia Pacific and Latin America regions.
Product Definition:
A mineral lubricant is a substance that is used to reduce friction in machinery. This can be done by either coating the surfaces with the lubricant or filling the air spaces between them with it. Mineral lubricants are important because they can help machines run more smoothly and efficiently, which can lead to less wear and tear on the parts.
3#:
3# is a light yellow, water-soluble, solid form of mineral oil. It has the viscosity of vegetable oils and therefore can be used as an excellent lubricant in hydraulic systems. 3 # is produced by the catalytic cracking process of petroleum refinery waste feedstock (petroleum coke) which contains about 60% to 70% carbon content.
5#:
5# is the standard unit of lubricant used in mineral oil industry. It represents the viscosity at 100°F (38°C). Lubricants with a higher number 5 are thin and water-based, whereas those with a lower number represent thicker oils that are ideal for high-temperature applications.
Mineral oils containing more than 30% of polyalkylene glycols (PAG) are usually blended to obtain better performance at high temperatures.
Application Insights:
The machinery & equipment segment accounted for the largest share of over 40% in 2017. The growth can be attributed to the rising demand from construction, mining and agricultural sectors. In addition, increasing use of mineral lubricants in industrial machinery and equipment owing to its properties such as resistance towards oxidation is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period.
Mineral lubricants are used for a wide range of applications including diesel engine oil replacement, high-performance engines and hydraulic systems among others. They are also used extensively in various automotive applications including transmission fluids, brake fluids, motor oils along with other niche segments such as luxury vehicles or sports cars among others where superior performance is required but not necessarily maximum horsepower at all costs which makes it a good compromise between performance and cost savings without compromising on either one of them completely depending upon application requirements.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global mineral lubricant market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth of this region can be attributed to increasing demand from countries such as China, India, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia. Asia Pacific is also one of the largest producers of minerals including lithium, copper and others which are used for manufacturing purposes.
The growing population coupled with rising living standards have led to an increase in consumer spending on electronics products across emerging economies such as China and India. This has resulted into increased demand for industrial machinery & equipment which further drives product consumption across various industries including automotive, construction & transportation etc., thus driving regional market growth over the forecast period.
Europe was another major contributor towards industry expansion owing to high mineral consumption levels coupled with stringent regulations regarding environmental pollution caused during manufacturing processes or byproducts involved during oil refining process etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the automotive and transportation sector
- Rising awareness about the benefits of mineral lubricants over synthetic lubricants
- Growing industrialization and urbanization in developing countries
- Technological advancements in production processes of mineral lubricants
- Stringent environmental regulations for reducing emissions from vehicles
