Product Definition:
Mitotane (Lysodren) is a drug used to treat patients with advanced adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare type of cancer that starts in the cells of the adrenal gland. Mitotane is also used to treat patients with Cushing's syndrome, a disorder caused by too much cortisol in the body.
Tablet:
Tablet is a form of packaging in which solid or liquid drugs are compressed into small pieces, each weighing approximately one-fifth of an ounce. The drug is mixed with excipients and then coated with a shell made up of gelatin, sugar, or other material. Tablets are convenient to handle as compared to capsules and powder owing to their soft consistency. They can be easily divided into equal doses for administration by the patient as well as the healthcare professional.
Capsule:
Capsule is a small package containing active ingredients. It is used to protect medicines from light, moisture, and air. Mitotane (Mitoraj) capsules are used for the treatment of breast cancer in women.
It works by causing damage to the DNA of cancer cells which then prevents them from reproducing and growing into an abnormal shape. Capsules also prevent normal healthy cells from becoming cancerous.
Application Insights:
The use of mitotane for the treatment of adrenal cortical carcinoma was the largest revenue-generating segment in 2017. The drug is used as a second line therapy owing to its higher cost and non-availability in some countries. It is, however, considered as an essential medicine by the WHO due to its effectiveness against cancer and other diseases caused due to overactive adrenal glands.
