Market Overview:
The global MMR vaccines market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to factors such as rising incidence of measles, increasing demand for combination vaccines, and growing awareness about the benefits of MMR vaccination. Based on type, the global MMR vaccines market is segmented into monovalent, combinational, divalent, and trivalent vaccines. The monovalent vaccine segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global MMR vaccines market in 2018. This segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. This growth can be attributed to rising demand for single-dose monovalent measles vaccine formulations and increasing incidence of measles worldwide. Based on application, the global MMR vaccines market is divided into pediatric applications (0-17 years), adolescent applications (18-23 years), adult applications (24-59 years), and elderly applications (>60 years).
Product Definition:
MMR vaccines are a combination vaccine that protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. It is usually given to children in two doses: the first dose at 12 to 15 months old and the second dose at 4 to 6 years old. The MMR vaccine is very important because it helps protect children from these serious diseases.
Monovalent:
Monovalent vaccines are those used for the prevention of a single disease. They are different from bivalent and trivalent vaccines as they target and protect against a single virus, rather than two or more viruses in combination. Monovalent vaccines can be administered to individuals without previous immunization owing to their higher efficacy.
Combinational:
Combinational medicines or vaccines involve the use of more than one drug or vaccine to treat a particular disease. For instance, the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is a combinatorial vaccine as it involves using three separate injections to stimulate the body’s immune system and protect against measles, mumps and rubella. Similarly, hepatitis B vaccination also involves using three shots over a period of six months.
Application Insights:
Adults application segment held the largest share of more than 50.0% in 2017. The growing geriatric population and increasing number of people with immune system disorders are the major factors driving the demand for measles vaccines in adults. According to data published by U.S Department of Health & Human Services, around 1,000 cases of measles were reported in 2015 which resulted in deaths Of about 21 million who received vaccine against this disease globally since 1963 till 2014 (Measles Vaccine: A Global Perspective).
The pediatric segment is expected to be fastest-growing at a CAGR 5.7% from 2018 to 2030 owing to rising awareness regarding immunization against a number of diseases particularly targeted vaccines.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the market in 2017 and is expected to maintain its position during the forecast period. This can be attributed to increasing government initiatives, growing target population base, and rising incidence of measles. For instance, in December 2015, WHO launched an initiative called Measles & Rubella Initiative (MRI) with a focus on eliminating rubella and maternal mortality associated with it by 2020 through mass vaccination programs. In addition, Asia Pacific governments are continuously investing in research & development activities for developing new vaccines as well as improving existing immunization programs against major vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles/mumps/rubella (MMR).
In November 2016; India’s Department of Health launched a national immunization program against 12 major diseases including MMR along with other measures for tackling undernutrition among children aged 1-12 years. Moreover high prevalence of malnutrition has led to increased susceptibility towards infectious disease which needs immediate attention from public health authorities worldwide.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of measles and other MMR-preventable diseases: The global incidence of measles has decreased by 79% from 2000 to 2016. However, the disease still causes around 134,200 deaths each year. This number could be reduced significantly with increased uptake of MMR vaccines.
- Improved vaccine efficacy and safety: The latest version of the MMR vaccine (MMRV) is more efficacious and safer than earlier versions, thus increasing its uptake rates.
- Growing awareness about the benefits of vaccination: There is a growing awareness among parents about the importance of vaccinating their children against measles and other diseases preventable by MMR vaccines.
