Market Overview:

The global monofocal intraocular lens (IOLs) market is expected to register a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period, 2018-2030. The market growth can be attributed to factors such as rising prevalence of eye disorders, increasing demand for premium IOLs and technological advancements in the field of ophthalmology. Based on type, the global monofocal intraocular lens (IOLs) market is segmented into not pre-loaded IOLs and pre-loaded IOLs. The not pre-loaded IOL segment is further subsegmented into foldable and nonfoldable lenses. The foldable lenses subsegment is expected to register a higher CAGR during the forecast period as compared to nonfoldable lenses due to their advantages such as easy implantation and lesser postoperative complications. Based on application, the global monofocal intraocular lens (Iols) market is segmented into hospital, clinic and others segments. Among these segments, hospital segment accounted for majority share in 2017 owing to rising number of cataract surgeries across the globe coupled with growing awareness about advanced surgical procedures among patients.

Global Monofocal Intraocular Lens (IOLs) Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) is a type of artificial lens that is implanted in the eye to replace the natural lens after it has been removed because of cataract or other disease. A monofocal IOL provides one focal point for sharp vision, usually at distance.

Not Pre-loaded IOLs:

IOLs are used in cataract surgery and refractive error treatment. Pre-loaded IOLs have been developed recently which is a new concept in the industry. These lenses are made of polymer material and they contain an ultrasound device that helps in breaking up the lens into small pieces, hence it is called as fragmented lens technology (FLT).

Pre-loaded IOLs:

Pre-loaded IOLs are implants that are implanted into the eye during cataract surgery. The mechanism of action is to deliver a focused beam of light on the retina by using a small camera and then move the implant towards the back of the eye.

The market for pre-loaded IOLs has been growing at an exponential rate over recent years, owing to technological advancements in this field and increasing demand for cataract surgeries across various geographies.

Application Insights:

The others application segment held the largest share of more than 50.0% in 2017. The other applications include hospitals, clinics and ophthalmic surgery centers. These facilities do not necessarily have an advanced infrastructure and equipment; however, they provide free diagnosis as well as treatment for a wide range of eye diseases with no or minimal charge to the patients. This has led to a significant increase in demand for monofocal IOLs at these facilities across the world especially during times when advanced healthcare services are not readily available due to natural disasters such as earthquake or civil unrests like terrorism across various regions of the world.

Regional Analysis:

North America dominated the global monofocal intraocular lens (IOLs) market in 2017. This is due to factors such as favorable reimbursement policies, high prevalence of cataract and increasing awareness about advanced IOLs. The region is expected to maintain its dominance throughout the forecast period owing to growing geriatric population base and rising incidences of eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Asia Pacific is anticipated to be the fastest-growing regional market over the forecast period owing to a large patient pool, improving healthcare facilities & infrastructure, and rising medical tourism in emerging economies such as India & China. Moreover, an increase in government initiatives for tackling blindness caused by cataract will boost growth further. For instance, The National Programme for Control of Blindness operated by Ministry of Health Labour Welfare Malaysia since 2014 has provided free operations for patients suffering from congenital cataracts thus driving demand across Malaysia & Indonesia annually.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing geriatric population: The global geriatric population is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2016 to 2020, according to a study by Grand View Research, Inc. This will lead to an increase in the demand for monofocal IOLs as the elderly are more susceptible to age-related vision problems such as cataracts and presbyopia.
  • Rising prevalence of eye diseases: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 285 million people worldwide were visually impaired in 2015, of which 39 million were blind. This number is expected to increase due to the rising prevalence of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Monofocal IOLs are used for treating these conditions and hence will see increasing demand in coming years.
  • Technological advancements: The technology behind monofocal IOLs is constantly evolving with new products being launched every year aimed at addressing various shortcomings of earlier versions (such as poor night vision or halos around lights). This will help keep the market competitive and drive innovation, resulting in better products being available at lower costs over time .
