Market Overview:
The global motor vehicle leasing market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, rising disposable income, and technological advancements in the automotive industry. The passenger cars segment is expected to dominate the global motor vehicle leasing market during the forecast period owing to the increasing demand for luxury and sports cars. The commercial vehicles segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than that of passenger cars due to increase in freight traffic across all regions. In terms of application, commercial customers are expected to account for a larger share of the global motor vehicle leasing market during 2018-2030 as compared with non-commercial customers.
Product Definition:
Motor Vehicle Leasing is the contractual agreement between a lessor and lessee for the use of a motor vehicle. The importance of Motor Vehicle Leasing is that it allows businesses to acquire vehicles without having to make a large capital investment. It also provides tax benefits, as well as flexible terms and conditions.
Passenger Cars:
Passenger cars are generally designed for the transportation of 15 to 8 passengers and are used for commercial purposes. They have high demand in countries such as India, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam due to increasing population coupled with rising disposable income levels. Passenger cars can be segmented into two types: Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV). LCVs include pick up vans while HCVs include van or truck bodies with between 7 & 15 seats.
Commercial Vehicles:
Commercial vehicles include trucks, buses, and vans. They are designed for the transportation of goods and passengers. The goods can be loaded either on a trailer or in the body of the vehicle itself. Commercial vehicles have a higher load capacity as compared to passenger cars which enables them to carry more cargo at once without paying loading penalties or having to change routes.
Application Insights:
The commercial customers segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 60.0% in 2017 and is anticipated to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for passenger cars among middle-class income groups that have been growing at a rapid pace across developing countries including China, India and Brazil. These are generally purchased on a hire purchase basis with high interest rates which makes it expensive as compared to leasing vehicles on long term basis thus restricting its use in this application segment.
The non-commercial customers include individuals owning second hand cars or trucks who wish to lease them out or companies leasing new vehicles on an occasional basis such as delivery vans, taxies etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has a large number of car and passenger vehicle manufacturers, which have been outsourcing production activities to low-cost developing countries such as India, China and Thailand. This trend is expected to have a negative impact on regional demand for leasing purposes owing to reduced operational costs for the lessors. However, this scenario may change over time as some of these manufacturers are re-inventing themselves by shifting their focus towards electric vehicles or self-driving cars.
The European market was valued at USD X billion in 2017 and is anticipated to grow at an estimated CAGR of XX% from 2018 To 2030 owing high ownership percentage of commercial vehicles among consumers across Germany, U.K., France and other major economies including Spain).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for leased vehicles from the corporate sector
- Growing popularity of leasing among millennials
- Proliferation of online leasing platforms
- Introduction of innovative lease products and services
- Rising demand for luxury cars
