It is also known as nitroaniline and used in the production of aniline and derivatives. It is a colorless liquid with a mild aromatic odor. Above 98% of the aniline produced worldwide is processed to form N-Methylaniline (MAN).

Coupling solvent was the major application segment and accounted for over 50% of global demand in 2016. The product is widely used as a coupling agent in organic reactions due to its ability to form carbon-carbon bonds. This interaction leads to formation of more stable compounds resulting into longer life span compared to when dye is applied directly onto fabric without using aniline based coupler agents.
