Market Overview:
The global n-propyl mercaptan market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for n-propyl mercaptan in various applications such as food, organic solvent, chemical intermediate and others. Additionally, rising awareness about the benefits of using n-propyl mercaptan is also propelling the growth of this market. Some of the key players operating in this market are BASF SE (Germany), The Dow Chemical Company (U.S.), Mitsui Chemicals Inc.
Product Definition:
n-Propyl Mercaptan is an organosulfur compound with the formula CH3CH2SH. It is a colorless liquid that smells like rotting eggs. n-propyl mercaptan is used as a flavoring agent and as an intermediate in the production of other sulfur compounds.
Food Grade:
Food grade n-propyl mercaptan is a type of flavoring agent used in food products such as meat, poultry, and seafood. It has an aroma similar to vinegar and garlic. The product is also known as propionic acid esters or acylated derivatives of butyric acid. Food grade n-propyl mercaptan can be produced by the fermentation of bacteria found in the soil or microorganisms grown on sugarcane feedstock.
Chemical Grade:
Chemical grade is a term used in the n-propyl mercaptan industry to define products that are pure and free from any contaminants. Chemical grade propyl mercaptan can be further processed to produce high purity (99%) n-propyl mercaptans by using distillation or filtration techniques. Chemicals that do not meet the specifications of chemical grade are termed as “commercial” or “consumer”grade chemicals.
Application Insights:
The global n-propyl mercaptan market is segmented on the basis of application into food, organic solvent, chemical intermediate and other applications. The food grade n-propyl mercaptan (Diacetyl Phosphate) was the dominant application in 2017. This product is used as a preservative in foods such as cheese and dairy products to prevent mold growth. It also acts as an emulsifier, antioxidant and flavor enhancer in these foods.
Organic solvents are anticipated to be one of the fastest growing segments during the forecast period owing to rising use of this chemical compound within various industries including pharmaceuticals.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for a major share of global production owing to cheap labor costs, which are also one of the key factors driving product demand in this region. China is one of the leading producers as well as consumers of n-propyl mercaptan globally; it accounted for approximately 50% share in terms of consumption and production respectively.
North America emerged as a significant consumer due to high product demand from various end-use industries including food, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and solvents among others. U S has been witnessing increasing shale gas exploration activities coupled with growing chemical manufacturing industry on accountS abundant availability feedstock such that these factors have ledto an increasein n-propyl mercaptan’s utilization rate across this region over past few years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as paints & coatings, adhesives, and sealants
- Rising awareness about the benefits of n-propyl mercaptan in various applications
- Growing investments by key players in R&D to develop new products and applications
- Expansion of manufacturing capacities by key players to cater to the increasing demand for n-propyl mercaptan globally
- Rising popularity of green solvents owing to their environmental friendly nature
