Market Overview:
The global natural fatty acids market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for bio-based products and the growing awareness about the benefits of natural fatty acids over synthetic fatty acids. Natural fatty acids are derived from plant or animal sources, whereas synthetic fatty acids are derived from petrochemicals. The use of natural fatty acids offers several advantages over their synthetic counterparts, such as improved performance, environmental friendliness, and biodegradability. Based on type, the global natural fatty acids market is segmented into n-butanol, 2-ethylhexanol, and isobutanol segments. N-Butanol is projected to be the fastest growing segment during the forecast period owing to its high solvency power and compatibility with a wide range of resins and solvents.
Product Definition:
A fatty acid is a molecule composed of a chain of carbon atoms with attached hydrogen atoms. Fatty acids occur naturally in oils from plants and animals. They are also produced artificially as components of detergents, lubricants, and other industrial products.
Fatty acids are important components of the cells that make up all tissues in the body.
N-butanol:
N-butanol, also known as 1-butanol is a volatile, colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is usually produced by the catalytic oxidation of ethanol. N-Butanol can be used as an additive in the formulation of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals products or consumed directly as fuel for vehicles and power stations.
2-ethylhexanol:
2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) is an organic compound that is classified as a ketone. It has a molecular formula of C16H24O and the molecular weight is 132.07. The chemical structure of 2-ethylhexanol is similar to that of fatty acids; it consists of a carbon chain with two oxygen groups (eicosanoyl).
Application Insights:
The acetates segment led the global natural fatty acids market in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The increasing use of fatty acid esters such as butyl acetate and ethyl lactate in non-dairy creameries, bakery products, fruit flavors and soft drinks is expected to drive demand for these ingredients.
Lubricant oil additives are derived from vegetable sources such as soybean oil or cottonseed oil. They are used in lubricating oils for engine maintenance purposes owing to their anti- oxidation properties which help prevent metal on metal contact between moving parts thus preventing wear & tear of engines & machinery. Increasing industrialization & mechanization have increased the consumption of lubricants thus driving demand for naturally derived ingredients like NĻFA which have low friction properties compared to synthetic counterparts.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for a major share of global natural fatty acid production, which has been witnessing an increase owing to rising demand from various end-use industries such as paints & coatings, automotive, construction, and others. China is one of the largest producers and consumers of these products in this region.
The Asia Pacific witnessed significant growth in solvents application due to technological advancements coupled with increasing industrialization across several economies including India and China. Moreover, growing awareness regarding sustainable manufacturing practices along with stringent government regulations on VOC emissions are anticipated to drive product demand from solvent applications over the forecast period.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for healthy and organic foods: The global market for natural fatty acids is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2016 to 2021. This growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for healthy and organic foods, which are perceived as being more nutritious than conventional foods.
- Rising awareness about the health benefits of natural fatty acids: There is a growing awareness among consumers about the health benefits of natural fatty acids, such as improved heart health, reduced inflammation, and better cognitive function. This is driving demand for products that contain these nutrients.
- Growing popularity of functional foods: Functional foods are those that offer additional health benefits beyond basic nutrition. They are becoming increasingly popular among consumers due to their potential to improve overall well-being . Natural fatty acids are a key ingredient in many functional food products, thus contributing to the growth of this market segment .
