Market Overview:

The global natural gas liquids (NGLs) market is estimated to be valued at US$ XX Mn in 2018 and is projected to register a CAGR of X.X% over the forecast period (2018-2030), reaching a value of US$XX Mn by 2030. The market is segmented on the basis of type, application and region. On the basis of type, ethane accounts for majority share in terms of revenue generated in the global NGLs market followed by propane, iso-butane, normal butane and pentanes. Ethane finds major applications in residential sector as well as petrochemical plants refineries across different regions. Propane has emerged as one of the most preferred fuel gases for vehicles globally due to its high calorific value and environmental benefits over gasoline or diesel fuels. Regionally, North America dominates the global NGLs market followed by Latin America, Europe Asia Pacific.

Global Natural Gas Liquids Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Natural gas liquids are hydrocarbons that are extracted from natural gas. These liquids include ethane, propane, butanes, and pentanes. Natural gas liquids have a variety of uses, including as fuel for vehicles and heating homes. They can also be used to produce plastics and other petrochemical products.

Ethane:

Ethane is a chemical compound of the alkane group. It is a colorless and flammable gas with a strong odor similar to petroleum ether. The majority of ethane produced worldwide is used as an intermediate in the production of natural gas liquids (NGL). NGL’s are being widely used across various end-use industries such as power generation, transportation fuels, manufacturing processes, and domestic applications like heating fuel.

Propane:

Propane is a colorless and highly flammable gas with a slight sweet odor. It is usually produced as a by-product when the petroleum refining process yields gasoline or from coal gasification. Propane can be used as an fuel, for instance; in portable heaters, stoves, lamps and other home appliances that use liquefied gases such as - butane.

Application Insights:

Residential sector was the largest application segment and accounted for over 45% of global demand in 2017. Rapid urbanization coupled with rising disposable income is expected to drive the growth of residential sector, which in turn will fuel the product demand over the forecast period.

Industrial applications include chemical plants refineries, steel mills power plants along with other industrial facilities that use natural gas liquids as a feedstock for their operations. The rapid industrialization across emerging economies such as India China Brazil etc., is anticipated to propel industry expansion thereby driving product consumption over next eight years.

Petrochemical plants are major end users of these liquid hydrocarbons (LH)s and together they account for around 40% market share by volume on account of its wide application scope including polymers manufacturing & resins extraction among others.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific was the leading regional market in 2017 and accounted for a share of more than 60% of the total revenue. The region is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period as well due to increasing shale gas exploration activities in China, India, and Australia. In addition, growing industrialization coupled with rapid urbanization has resulted in increased demand for natural gas across Asia Pacific.

The growth of industries including chemicals & petrochemicals along with power generation sectors is anticipated to augment product consumption across Asia Pacific over the forecast period. However, strict government regulations regarding carbon emissions are likely to affect liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade patterns which may impact industry dynamics across some countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia negatively during 2018-2022  periods.

North America emerged as one of the major consumers owing to significant shale gas production particularly from countries such as Canada and United States that have majority shareholdings by indigenous population groups especially within U S .

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from the transportation sector as a result of stringent environmental regulations for gasoline and diesel vehicles.
  • Growing demand for NGLs in petrochemical industries to manufacture various products such as plastics, solvents, and detergents.
  • Proliferation of shale gas reserves in the U.S., which is resulting in increased production of NGLs and driving down their prices globally.
  • Stringent regulations on emissions from coal-fired power plants that are encouraging the use of natural gas as an alternative fuel source, thereby boosting the market for NGLs downstream products such as ammonia and methanol used in fertilizer production and fuel cells respectively .
