A negative temperature coefficient thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance decreases as the temperature increases. This type of thermistor is often used in sensors to detect changes in temperature. Radial Type:


Radial type NTC thermistor is a device used for measuring temperature in the radial direction. It consists of two metal plates joined by a thin wire, and as heat is applied to the jointed wire, it expands causing an electrical change across the junction between the two metals. The larger part of this type of thermometer is usually made from aluminum; however other metals such as copper or steel may also be used depending on application and cost factor.


Diode Type:


Diode type is used to detect the temperature and other related parameters in NTC thermistors. The diodes are made of two semiconductor materials such as p-type silicon and n-type silicon, which allows current flow in one direction only. As the resistance increases, it becomes difficult for current to flow through diode hence it gets heated up.


The process of heating by resistance is called thermal excitation or heat generation.
