Market Overview:
The global neurovascular embolization device market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to factors such as rising incidence of neurological disorders, technological advancements in neurovascular embolization devices, and increasing demand for minimally invasive procedures. Based on type, the global neurovascular embolization device market is segmented into embolization coils, flow diversion stents, liquid embolic systems, and aneurysm clips. The embolization coils segment is expected to account for the largest share of the global neurovascular embolization device market in 2018. This can be attributed to the increasing use of these devices for treating various neurological disorders such as cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).
Product Definition:
A neurovascular embolization device is a medical device that is used to block or close off blood vessels in the brain. This can be done to treat conditions such as an aneurysm, when there is a bulge in a blood vessel that can rupture and cause bleeding, or to stop the flow of blood to a tumor.
Embolization Coils:
Embolization coils are used in neurovascular and peripheral vascular procedures. They are also used in the treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. The primary function of an embolectomy coil is to act as a support system for the catheter during insertion into blood vessels or lungs, thereby helping maintain its position while delivering radiation on the target vessel or lung tissue.
Flow Diversion Stents:
Flow diversion stents are used to divert blood flow from a tumor or an infected area away from healthy tissues. It is also used in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms, carotid artery disease, and peripheral artery disease. Flow diversion stents include two components: a catheter and a balloon that is inserted into the blocked vessel where the catheter releases drugs which widen the aneurysm wall allowing blood flow through it again.
Application Insights:
Based on application, the global market is segmented into hospital-based, school of medicine based and others. The hospital-based segment dominated the overall market in terms of revenue in 2017. This can be attributed to factors such as availability of advanced equipment at hospitals that are equipped with neurovascular units for treating life threatening conditions associated with brain aneurysms and other vascular disorders.
The increasing prevalence of neurological disorders coupled with rising geriatric population across the globe is expected to drive demand over the forecast period. According to WHO, it has been estimated that by 2050 there will be approximately 1 billion people above 60 years old globally which in turn is anticipated to boost demand for these devices during this period (2030 - 2049).
On basis of geography, the global market has been divided into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017 owing to favorable reimbursement policies, increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and cerebrovascular disorders, presence of well-established healthcare facilities in the region, and availability of highly skilled neurovascular embolization surgeons. Moreover, growing number of research studies conducted on NVES is also one among the major factors responsible for regional growth.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period due to rising incidence rates of various neurological disorders coupled with improving healthcare infrastructure in this region. In addition, increasing awareness about NVES procedures as a treatment option will drive demand further. Furthermore, government initiatives such as “Hospital Efficient Management†program by Ministry Of Health And Family Welfare (MoHFW) are anticipated to help improve hospital management practices which will ultimately drive demand for medical devices over next eight years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of stroke: The number of people affected by stroke is increasing at an alarming rate. This is mainly due to the aging population and lifestyle changes. According to the World Health Organization, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. In 2015, there were around 15 million strokes globally, resulting in 5.5 million deaths and another 5 million people becoming permanently disabled. The number of strokes is expected to increase further in the coming years due to the aging population and growing prevalence of risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc
- Rising demand for minimally invasive procedures: There has been a shift towards minimally invasive procedures in recent years due to their many advantages over traditional open surgery such as shorter hospital stay time, reduced pain & blood loss, faster recovery time & return to normal activities etc. Neurovascular embolization devices are increasingly being used for minimally invasive procedures as they offer several benefits over other treatment options such as less invasiveness and lower risk of complications etc
- Technological advancements: The neurovascular embolization device market is witnessing rapid technological advancements with new products being launched regularly into the marketplaces These devices are becoming more sophisticated with each passing year offering better patient outcomes They are also becoming more affordable which will help drive their adoption rates among healthcare providers worldwide
