Product Definition:


O-Cresol is an organic compound with the formula CH3OC6H4OH. It is a colorless liquid that is slightly soluble in water and miscible with most organic solvents. O-Cresol is produced on a large scale as a precursor to other compounds, such as plastics and pesticides.


Extraction Process:


Extraction process is used to produce O-Cresol from coal tar and coke oven by heating at 200 degree Celsius for 6 hours. The yield of the extraction process is about 80% which makes it a major source of production around the world. Extraction method also provides other chemicals such as phenols, benzene, and xylenes along with o-cresol which are valuable in their own right.

Synthesis Process:


The synthesis process of O-Cresol is similar to the process followed for production of other chemical compounds. The raw materials required for the manufacture of o-cresol are hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. These are obtained from fossil fuels or by burning coal in power plants. The manufacturing companies use a combination of different technologies for producing o-cresol depending upon the availability and purity requirements.

The global o-cresol market is segmented based on application into resins, herbicides, disinfectants and other applications. O-Cresol is widely used in the manufacturing of resins owing to its excellent solvent properties. It can also be used as a reactant for the production of polymers and copolymers which are further utilized in various end-use industries such as construction materials, coatings & adhesives or even pharmaceuticals.
