Product Definition:


Oleum is a Latin word meaning "oil." Oleum is used to refer to various oils, including olive oil, mineral oil, and petroleum oil.


20% Oleum:


20% oleum is a colorless and highly flammable liquid. It has a strong odor similar to that of gasoline. It is produced by the catalytic cracking of ethylene at 200-degree temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen or steam. 20% oleum can also be produced by direct hydration of ethylene at 80 degrees Celsius with no catalyst, but this process takes longer than the catalytic method as there is no chemical reaction to accelerate the process.


25% Oleum:


25% oleum is a colorless and highly flammable liquid used in the production of polyolefin resins. It is also used as an intermediate for manufacturing various chemicals such as ethylene glycols, propylene glycols, and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Owing to its low boiling point; it can be easily added to other chemical compounds which increases its application scope significantly.


Application Insights:


The other application segment includes paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, printing inks, leather treatment oils and fats & waxes. Oleum is widely used in paints and coatings as it helps to reduce the surface tension between two surfaces which are likely to be in contact with each other. The chemical industry is one of the largest consumers of oleum as it is used for manufacturing various chemicals including aromatics hydrocarbons polymers resins etc. Other major applications include agricultural chemicals fertilizer oil processing etc.


Fertilizer industry was the largest consumer of oleum accounting for over 25% share globally in terms of volume consumed annually during 2015-16 due to its ability to improve soil productivity through enhanced nitrogen fixation capabilities coupled with improved water holding capacity thereby promoting plant growth across various agro-based activities worldwide.
