Market Overview:
The global on-site gas generation market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen gases in various industrial and commercial applications. Additionally, the growing popularity of membrane generators is also propelling the growth of this market. However, high installation and maintenance costs may restrain the growth of this market to some extent during the forecast period. On-site gas generation can be classified into two types: PSA generators and membrane generators. PSA generators are more popular than membrane generators owing to their low cost and easy operation; however, membrane generators are gaining traction due their high efficiency levels as compared with PSA generators. On-site gas generation finds major applications in nitrogen generation, oxygen generation and hydrogen production; among these three applications, nitrogengeneration accounts for a majority share in terms of revenue generated by on-site gasgeneration systems globally .
Product Definition:
On-site gas generation is the process of generating gases, such as hydrogen and methane, on site at a facility. This can be done through various methods, such as steam reforming or partial oxidation. On-site gas generation is important because it allows facilities to produce their own gases rather than relying on outside sources. This can provide a number of benefits, including lower costs and increased security.
PSA Generator:
PSA generator is used for gas generation from solid waste. PSA generators are also known as landfill gasifiers or anaerobic digesters. They operate by converting the organic contents of waste into combustible gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane among others. These gases when produced in large volumes can be utilized to provide energy for cooking and heating purposes among others.
Membrane Generator:
A membrane generator is used to convert solid waste into a gas. The generated gases are used for energy production or further processed by the on-site generation system. Membrane generators use membranes that are made from materials such as polymeric, ceramic or fiberglass composites. These membranes are installed in a horizontal well across which the feed material is passed and then converted into a gas using heat and pressure applied to it.
Application Insights:
The market is segmented by application into nitrogen generation, oxygen generation, hydrogen generation and others. The others application segment includes carbon dioxide and nitrogen purification. Nitrogen is an essential element for the growth of plants as it provides nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur to the plant roots. Thus, on-site gas generators are used in agricultural settings for providing purer air without using additional land or space.
On-site gas generators are also used in medical facilities to provide a consistent supply of clean air for operating rooms during surgeries or procedures that require patient exposure to anesthetic gases such as nitrous oxide or oxygen. This reduces the risk of contamination from external sources since these external sources could be carrying bacteria or other pathogens that may cause disease outbreaks if they were introduced into a building's ventilation system or if they were mixed with other gases being supplied through this system (such as natural ventilation).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global on-site gas generation market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The presence of emerging economies such as China, India, and Japan has resulted in an increased demand for energy. Rising population coupled with increasing industrialization has also led to a significant increase in energy consumption. These factors are anticipated to drive regional growth over the next eight years.
Europe accounted for 24% of the total revenue share in 2016 owing to rising environmental concerns among consumers coupled with government initiatives favoring clean fuel technologies such as on-site gas generation for power production purposes in various countries including Germany, U.K.
The Middle East & Africa region is projected to witness substantial growth during the forecast period due to increasing oil & gas exploration activities across countries such as Saudi Arabia.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for on-site gas generation from the industrial and commercial sectors due to the advantages of on-site gas generation over centralized gas generation.
- Proliferation of microturbines and fuel cells for on-site gas generation, which are more efficient and have lower emissions than traditional technologies, driving market growth.
- Growing demand for distributed energy resources (DER) to meet grid reliability needs, with on-site gas generators providing an important part of DER portfolios.
- Regulations encouraging or mandating the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel are expected to drive growth in the market for small scale natural Gas Generation Systems
