Market Overview:
The global peripheral stents market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to factors such as the increasing incidence of peripheral artery diseases (PAD), technological advancements in stent design and development, and rising demand for minimally invasive procedures. Based on type, the global peripheral stents market is segmented into balloon-expandable and self-expandable stents. The balloon-expandable segment is expected to account for the majority share of the global peripheral stents market in 2018. This can be attributed to factors such as their ease of use and low complication rates as compared to self-expanding stents. Based on application, the global peripheral stents market is segmented into SFA, PPA, and others (including iliac arteries). The SFA segment accounted for a major share of the global peripheralstent smarket in 2017 owingtothe high prevalenceof PADin this region . In terms of geography, North America accounted for a major shareof themarketin2017due toprevalenceof lifestyle diseasessuchas obesityand diabetes mellitus , which are riskfactorsforPAD .
Product Definition:
A peripheral stent is a tiny metal mesh tube that's inserted into an artery to prop it open and improve blood flow. Peripheral stents are used to treat conditions such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which can cause pain in the legs when walking due to a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner wall of the arteries.
Balloon-expandable:
Balloon-expandable stents are used to treat blocked or narrowing of a blood vessel. They are made up of flexible, hollow plastic tubes and can be filled with an expandable material such as saline solution, which upon insertion into the blood vessel expands in place to provide a larger surface area for drug delivery. The expanded size provides more space for the medicine and helps it reach all parts of the affected artery.
Self-expandable:
Self-expandable stents are used in peripheral vascular diseases. The self-expanding stent is a kind of expandable device that is inserted into the blood vessel to treat or prevent aneurysms, atherosclerosis, and other peripheral vascular diseases. It consists of a metal scaffold that can be filled with medicine by using a balloon catheter.
Application Insights:
The others segment held the largest share of the global peripheral stents market in 2017. This segment includes PDA, LFA, and CVD. The growing prevalence of diabetes is expected to be a major driving factor for this application segment over the forecast period. According to WHO, approximately 1 in 10 adults are estimated to have diabetes globally; however, only about 8% of them are estimated to be receiving treatment due to lack of access and affordability issues.
Surgical intervention with regard to Peripheral Arterial Diseases (PAD) has gained significant traction owing to increasing awareness among patients as well as healthcare professionals regarding early diagnosis & management options available for PAD.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global peripheral stents market in 2017. The presence of well-established healthcare infrastructure, high adoption rate of advanced technologies, and favorable reimbursement policies are some factors driving the growth of this regional market. In addition, increasing incidence of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes is expected to fuel the demand for minimally invasive surgeries and peripheral devices in North America over the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth during the forecast period owing to rising geriatric population and improving economic conditions in emerging countries such as China & India & Japan (CIJ). Furthermore, growing awareness about various treatment options along with rising disposable income will drive this regional market further. Moreover, government initiatives encouraging medical tourism are expected to boost industry expansion over the next eight years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of peripheral artery diseases (PAD) due to growing aging population and rising prevalence of risk factors such as obesity, smoking, and diabetes.
- Growing demand for minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of PAD.
- Technological advancements in peripheral stents that offer enhanced safety and efficacy profiles over traditional open surgery procedures.
- Rising healthcare expenditure by governments and private players to support the growth of the peripheral stents market worldwide.
