Market Overview:
The global peripheral vascular stents market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to factors such as the increasing prevalence of peripheral artery diseases (PAD), technological advancements in stent design and manufacturing, and rising demand for minimally invasive procedures. Based on type, the global peripheral vascular stents market is segmented into balloon-expandable and self-expandable stents. The balloon-expandable segment is expected to account for the majority share of the global market in 2018 owing to its high adoption rates across hospitals, clinics, and other end users. However, the self-expandable segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR during the forecast period due to its advantages over balloon-expandable stents such as lower recoil forces and smaller profile sizes that make them suitable for use in small vessels. Based on application, the global peripheral vascular stents market is divided into hospital care, clinic care, and other applications including research institutes & laboratories and diagnostic centers. In 2018, hospital care accounted for majority share of this market followed by clinic care segments respectively. However; over time clinic care segments are anticipated witness highest growth rate due rising number outpatient treatments across globe .
Product Definition:
A peripheral vascular stent is a metal mesh tube that is inserted into an artery to keep it open. It is used to treat blockages in the arteries of the arms or legs.
Balloon-expandable:
Balloon-expandable stents are used to treat blocked or narrowing of a blood vessel. They are made up of flexible, thin wire that is covered with a thin plastic coating and then filled with air or some other gas. When the coated wire is bent, the covering expands and forms an opening through which blood can flow easily. The stent can be taken out after few days as it is designed to collapse when there is no longer any need for it.
Self-expandable:
Self-expandable stents are used in peripheral vascular stenting. They are also known as expandable or self-forming stents and they can be used for the treatment of thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic aortic aneurysms.
Application Insights:
Based on application, the global market is segmented into hospital, clinic and others. The other applications include emergency room, intensive care unit (ICU), home healthcare and ambulatory surgical centers. In 2017, the hospital segment dominated the market with a share of over 90% in terms of revenue as well as volume. This high share was primarily due to factors such as availability of advanced healthcare facilities along with experienced staff in most hospitals across countries such as India and China which have a high prevalence of peripheral vascular diseases.
The increasing geriatric population along with obesity & diabetes has led to an increase in cardiovascular diseases that eventually result in heart attack or stroke which is boosting demand for percutaneous coronary intervention procedures thus driving growth over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global peripheral vascular stents market in 2017. The presence of well-established healthcare infrastructure, high adoption rate of advanced technologies, and favorable reimbursement policies are some factors responsible for its large share. In addition, increasing incidence of diabetes is also expected to drive the regional market over the forecast period. According to CDC estimates published in 2016’s Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), around 29 million people had diabetes in U.S., with an increase of nearly 7% from 2014 to 2015.
Asia Pacific is expected to be one of the fastest-growing regions during the forecast years due to rising geriatric population and prevalence associated with lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disorders and hypertension which result into a greater number of peripheral artery disease cases leading to higher demand for PVS devices used for treatment or palliation purposes thus driving growth across this region especially in developing countries such as China.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing incidence of peripheral vascular diseases (PVDs) due to changing lifestyle and aging population
- Rising demand for minimally invasive procedures for treatment of PVDs
- Technological advancements in stent design and delivery systems that offer better outcomes
- Growing preference for drug-eluting stents over bare metal stents, especially in developed markets
- Expansion of private healthcare sector and increasing number of hospitals offering peripheral vascular interventions
