Market Overview:

The global petroleum coke market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for calcined petroleum coke and fuel grade petroleum coke from various applications such as construction, power generation, cement, storage, steel and others. Additionally, the growing demand for petcoke in Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa is also contributing to the growth of this market. However, factors such as environmental concerns related to petcoke emissions are restraining the growth of this market.

Global Petroleum (PET) Coke Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

Petroleum coke is a carbonaceous solid derived from the refinement of petroleum. It consists of a wide range of hydrocarbons, primarily carbon and hydrogen. Petroleum coke is used as an industrial fuel and as a raw material in the production of aluminum, chemicals, and other products.

Calcined Coke:

calcined coke is a product of thermal decomposition of petroleum coke. It is used as an additive in the production of PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) resin. Calcined coke has a composition similar to that of natural graphite and can be used as an alternative to conventional graphite in the production process, thereby reducing costs associated with its procurement and handling during manufacturing processes.

Fuel Grade:

Fuel grade is a type of coke which is used in the manufacturing process of PET. Fuel grade coke has different properties as compared to Lump Coke. It can be used for higher melting point products such as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). The fuel-grade product finds its major application in the plastic industry, whereas other grades find their major application in petroleum industries.

Application Insights:

The construction application segment accounted for the largest volume share of over 30% in 2017. The product is widely used in the construction industry as a raw material and coke is added to fireproof materials such as cement, mortar, stucco and bricks. Increasing use of steel in building & construction activities across the globe has led to increased production of steel from scratch mills. This has resulted in high demand for petroleum coke which serves as a reliable alternative fuel source for power generation purposes.

Petroleum coke is also used extensively as an additive into diesel and gas oil with various performance-enhancing properties including abrasion resistance, thermal stability.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has been witnessing increasing demand for petroleum coke from various end-use industries such as construction, power generation, steel production, etc. This growth can be attributed to rising energy needs and growing industrialization across emerging economies such as China and India.

China accounted for a major share of global consumption owing to rapid industrialization coupled with an increase in energy requirements due to climatic changes. In addition, factors such as low cost of raw material availability are anticipated to further drive industry expansion over the coming years.

North America emerged as one of the significant consumers of petroleum coke on account of high demand from cement manufacturing sector primarily in countries including U.S., Canada, Mexico and Brazil among others which are likely to propel market growth during the forecast period  (2018 - 2030).

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand from steel and aluminum industries: The global consumption of steel is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 3% during the period 2016-2021. This would lead to an increase in the demand for petroleum coke, as it is used as a fuel and/or a raw material in the production of steel. The global consumption of aluminum is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6% during the period 2016-2021, which would also lead to an increase in the demand for petroleum coke.
  • Rising investments in infrastructure: There has been an increasing focus on developing new infrastructure projects across various regions worldwide, especially in emerging economies such as China and India. This would lead to an increase in the demand for various commodities, including petroleum coke.
  • Growing use of petcoke in power generation: Petcoke has emerged as an attractive fuel option for power generation due to its low cost and high calorific value relative to other fuels such as coal and natural gas. As a result, there has been rising interest among utilities globally towards using petcoke for power generation purposes. This would lead to increased demand for petcoke globally over time.. 4) Stringent environmental regulations worldwide: Various governments around the world are increasingly implementing stringent environmental regulations governing emissions from industrial facilities (including those that use petcoke). These regulations are likely result In reduced availability (and higher costs)of traditional fuels such
