White phosphorus is a highly reactive, crystalline form of phosphorus that occurs in nature as a by-product of phosphoric acid. It has a purity level greater than 99.5%. White phosphorus can be produced either through the contact process or the thermal process. In the contact process, white phosphorus is obtained from (sulfuric) acid and phosphate rock; whereas in the thermal process it is derived from phosphoric acid and calcium sulfate or calcium carbonate.
Red phosphorus:
Red phosphorus is the commercial name for an inorganic chemical compound. It is a highly toxic and inflammable material, which can be easily obtained from fire logs or coal. Red phosphorus has several industrial uses including production of matches, fertilizers, plastic materials and others.
