Market Overview:

The global physical blowing agents market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for polyurethane foams, polystyrene foams, and polyolefin foams across various applications. In addition, the growing demand for insulation materials in construction and automotive industries is also contributing to the growth of this market. Based on type, the global physical blowing agents market can be segmented into ADC (azodicarbonamide), HFC (hydrofluorocarbons), and others. ADC held a major share of this market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its properties such as high thermal stability and low toxicity which make it suitable for use in various applications such as foam insulation materials, packaging films & sheets, automotive parts & components, etc. Based on application, the global physical blowing agents market can be segmented into polyurethane foams, polystyrene foams,,polyolefin foams,,and others,. Polyurethane foam accounted for a major share of this market in 2017 and is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than other segments duringthe forecast period.

Global Physical Blowing Agents Industry Outlook

Product Definition:

A physical blowing agent is a substance that is used to produce foam or expandable polystyrene insulation. These agents can be either gas or liquid and work by breaking down the polymer chains in the material, which causes it to become less dense and more cellular. This makes the material less stiff and more flexible, which allows it to be injected into small spaces.

ADC:

ADC (Active Denaturing Carbon) is a special type of carbon black with high thermal stability. It has applications in various industries such as plastics, rubber, and adhesives owing to its unique properties. The most important property of ADC is that it remains stable at all temperatures above room temperature. This makes it ideal for use in physical blowing agents used to produce flexible PVC pipes and medical devices such as catheters & guidewires.

HFC:

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are the group of compounds, which contain in their molecule only hydrogen and fluorine. They are used as a replacement for CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), which were previously used to reduce the depletion of the ozone layer.

Application Insights:

Polyurethane foams emerged as the largest application segment and accounted for over 30% of global market share in terms of volume in 2017. Rising demand from end-use industries such as automotive, construction and packaging is expected to drive the product consumption over the forecast period.

The growing popularity of lightweight vehicles is anticipated to augment polyurethane foam demand from automotive industry which itself is likely to propel growth on account of increasing fuel efficiency standards across various regions globally. Polystyrene foam followed closely behind polyurethane foams with a significant market share in terms of revenue also in 2017 owing to its ability to absorb sound and vibration enhancing its overall performance.

Regional Analysis:

Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing construction spending and rapid industrialization in emerging economies, such as China and India. In addition, rising awareness regarding green building initiatives is anticipated to propel demand for sustainable products in this region.

The market in Europe accounted for a share of more than 20% owing to stringent regulations by regulatory bodies pertaining environmental impacts caused due blowing agents consumption coupled with their production processes. However, these norms are projected to reduce over time as they negatively impact product penetration rates thereby hampering industry growth prospects in this region.

North America was valued at USD X million in 2017 and is expected to witness steady growth on account of growing demand from end-use industries including automotive interiors coatings adhesives packaging printing ink etc., which are likely benefit from HVAC system installations energy efficiency upgrades etc.

Growth Factors:

  • Increasing demand for lightweight and high-performance materials in automotive and aerospace industries
  • Growing demand from construction and insulation sectors
  • Rising awareness about the benefits of using physical blowing agents over traditional blowing agents
  • Technological advancements in manufacturing processes of physical blowing agents
  • Stringent environmental regulations governing the use of traditional blowing agents
