Market Overview:
The global plant cooking oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for plant-based cooking oils, especially in developing countries. In addition, the growing awareness about the health benefits of plant-based cooking oils is also contributing to the growth of this market. The peanut oil segment is expected to dominate the global plant cooking oil market during the forecast period, followed by soybean oil and rapeseed oil segments. The home use application segment is expected to account for a major share of the global plant cooking oil market during 2018–2030 owing to its growing popularity among consumers across regions.
Product Definition:
A plant cooking oil is a vegetable-based oil that is used for cooking. It is important because it helps to add flavor to food and it also helps to cook the food.
Peanut Oil:
Peanut oil is a vegetable oil produced from ground peanuts. It is a monounsaturated fat, which has similar properties as olive oil. The major difference between peanut and olive oils is that peanut does not contain any cholesterol and it has more antioxidants than other vegetable oils.
It also contains vitamin E, copper, manganese & magnesium as well as low levels of saturated fat & no trans-fat.
Soybean Oil:
Soybean oil is a cooking oil which is extracted from soybeans. It contains various vitamins and minerals such as vitamin K, omega-6 fatty acids, iron, magnesium and proteins. The antioxidant properties of the product help in protecting the body against heart diseases and cancer.
The product also helps in reducing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes or night sweats among women.
Application Insights:
The food processing industry was the largest application segment in 2017 and accounted for more than 54% of the global market share. The growth is attributed to increasing demand for plant cooking oil from fast food joints, restaurants and hotels. Plant-based oils are increasingly being used as a replacement for animal fats in processed foods owing to their healthier alternative nature.
Plant-based oils have higher smoke point compared to other edible oils which makes them suitable for deep frying at high temperatures without undergoing oxidation process resulting in harmful compounds like trans unsaturated fatty acids (TUFA). This factor is expected to increase product adoption over the coming years especially during competitions hosted by countries like India & China where people traditionally eat lots of fried foods as part of their diet due to religious reasons. In addition, rising awareness regarding health benefits associated with these products coupled with growing preference towards healthy lifestyle practices among consumers will fuel industry expansion over the forecast period.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global plant cooking oil market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for nearly 60% of the global population, and a large number of people are shifting towards a vegan diet, which requires special attention when it comes to cooking oils. This has resulted in high demand for soybean oil as well as other varieties such as peanut and rapeseed oils.
The Asia Pacific was followed by Europe with more than 20% share of the overall revenue in 2017. North America also had a significant share owing to growing awareness about healthy diets among consumers coupled with increasing health concerns over trans fats found naturally occurring in butterfat content plant based oils such as soybean, rapeseed, etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for plant cooking oil as a healthier alternative to animal-based cooking oils.
- Rising awareness about the health benefits of plant-based cooking oils among consumers.
- Growing popularity of vegan and vegetarian diets, which favor plant-based cooking oils over animal-based fats and oils.
- Increasing demand from emerging markets for healthier, more sustainable cooking options.
- Technological advancements that make production of plant-based cooking oils more efficient and cost effective
