Market Overview:
The global plasma for fractionation market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for coagulation factor, immune globulin, albumin and other therapeutic proteins. In addition, rising prevalence of chronic diseases and increasing number of blood transfusions are also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, recovered plasma accounted for the largest share in 2017 and is expected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its high purity and low cost as compared to source plasma.
Product Definition:
Plasma is the liquid component of blood, in which the red blood cells are suspended. Plasma makes up about 55% of the total volume of blood. It is a straw-colored fluid that contains nutrients, proteins, electrolytes, and hormones. Plasma also contains clotting factors and other proteins that help to fight infection.
Recovered Plasma:
Recovered plasma is a by-product obtained during the fractionation process of blood plasma. It consists of protein, nucleic acids, and some minerals. The amount of recovered plasma varies with the volume of blood collected and processing conditions (temperature & pressure).
Source Plasma:
Plasma is a blood-based liquid that can separate any two substances based on their properties. It's used in fractionation for the separation of different components in a mixture. Source plasma is taken from whole blood and it contains all the clotting factors, which enables its use as a reliable source for fractionation.
Source Plasma helps to improve yield & purity.
Application Insights:
The coagulation factor segment dominated the market in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. This can be attributed to an increase in demand for recombinant activated protein C (rAPC) as a blood thinner, which is derived from plasma. rAPC has been approved by U.S. FDA and European Commission (CE Marking) for use in treating hemophilia A and B patients, respectively, leading to increased product consumption across the globe since 2016.
Plasma-based products are also used for manufacturing various pharmaceuticals including immune globulin (IG), albumin, insulinotropic peptides such as human insulin or neutralizing antibodies against tumor-associated antigens such as epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR).
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the market in 2017 owing to the presence of a large number of players and well-established healthcare infrastructure. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period due to increasing R&D activities for plasma fractionation and rising adoption of advanced technologies. In addition, growing demand for plasma products from various end-use sectors such as medical & surgical, military & defense, blood donation is also expected to drive growth in this region.
Asia Pacific is anticipated to witness lucrative growth during the forecast period owing with rapid economic development coupled with improving healthcare infrastructure in countries such as India and China. Furthermore, rising awareness regarding blood donations among people especially youth will boost regional market growth during the projected time frame. Favorable government initiatives aimed at promoting exports from developing economies are further anticipated fuel regional market expansion over next eight years (2030).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for plasma fractionation products due to increasing incidence of chronic diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, and genetic disorders.
- Technological advancements in the field of plasma fractionation that has led to the development of novel and improved products.
- Growing number of private-sector players in the market that is resulting in increased competition and innovation.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using plasma fractionation products among healthcare professionals and consumers alike.
