Market Overview:
The global plastic railroad tie market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for plastic railroad ties from various applications such as railway, petrochemical, mining, and others. In terms of type, the turnout tie segment is projected to grow at a higher CAGR during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its growing demand from railway applications across the globe.
Product Definition:
A plastic railroad tie is a synthetic, man-made product that is used as a substitute for traditional wooden railroad ties. Plastic railroad ties are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and can be recycled after use.
Ordinary Tie:
An ordinary tie is a structural element of rail track systems. It has a number of uses in the railway industry, including to bind the rail tracks to the sleepers and support the weight of trains; as an anchor for mounting signal devices or guide wires; and as part of railroad bridge structures. They are manufactured from various materials including wood, plastic, fiberglass composites and steel rebar among others.
Turnout Tie:
A turnout tie is a device used to secure the rail track in position. It has a flat surface and two or more arms that are bent at 90 degrees. The ends of the arms are connected to the flat surface by a hinge, which allows them to move back and forth over the rail tracks.
Application Insights:
The railway application segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 60% in 2017. The segment is expected to witness significant growth on account of increasing demand for railways from countries, such as India, China and Japan. In addition, favorable government policies and funding for the development of new rail infrastructure are anticipated to further propel market growth over the forecast period.
Petrochemical was one of the prominent applications that accounted for a substantial volume share in 2017. Petrochemical ties are manufactured using high-performance polymers that offer superior chemical resistance along with enhanced durability and flexibility needed in industrial applications including oil & gas refineries and petrochemicals plants. These products can be easily installed by simply pushing them into place; they do not require any nails or screws making them ideal choices where space is limited or there are constraints regarding working height above ground level.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region has a large number of plastic manufacturers, which has resulted in high production volumes. China is one of the largest producers and consumers of plastic ties in this region owing to easy availability of raw materials as well as skilled labor at low cost.
The demand for ordinary tie was valued at USD X million in Asia Pacific, which accounted for more than 60% share of total revenue. The growth can be attributed to increasing infrastructure activities coupled with rapid industrialization across emerging economies such as India and China. In addition, growing emphasis on urbanization by various governments across these countries will boost product demand further over the coming years due to increased construction activities that will lead to an increase in railway network along with development projects including new buildings & offices etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the construction sector for plastic railroad ties as a replacement for traditional wooden ties is expected to be a key growth driver for the market over the next few years.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using plastic railroad ties, such as low maintenance and longer life span, is projected to boost market growth in the near future.
- The increasing use of plastic railroad ties in mass transit systems across developed and developing countries is anticipated to fuel market expansion during the forecast period.
- Growing investments in railway infrastructure by governments worldwide are likely to create lucrative opportunities for players operating in the global plastic railroad tie market over the next few years.
- . Technological advancements that lead to development of new types of plastic railroad ties are expected to provide impetus to market growth in forthcoming years
