Market Overview:
The global polar satcom market is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for satellite-based communication services, rising number of small satellites, and growing investments in space exploration. Based on type, the global polar satcom market can be segmented into low polar orbit (LPO), middle polar orbit (MPO), and high polar orbit (HPO) segments. The LPO segment is expected to account for a major share of the global Polar Satcom Market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its lower cost as compared with other types of orbits and higher data rate capacity. However, MPO is projected to grow at a higher CAGR than LPO during the forecast period owing to its advantages such as increased revisit time and improved image quality over LEO satellites. Based on application, the global Polar Satcom Market can be divided into natural resources management & monitoring, security & defense communications, communication industry applications such as broadband backhauling/fiber extension/last mile access networks deployment/fixed wireless access networks deployment etc., research & exploration activities including earth observation & remote sensing etc., and other applications including maritime surveillance etc.
Product Definition:
Polar Satcom is a satellite communications technology that uses satellites in orbits around the Earth's poles. These satellites are used to provide telecommunications and internet services to users in polar regions. The importance of Polar Satcom is that it provides essential telecommunications services to users in areas that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach.
Low Polar Orbit:
Low Polar Orbit (LPO) is a circular orbit with an altitude of approximately 60 to 90 degrees, which is inclined at an angle of less than 90 degrees from the equator. The inclination of the LPO orbital plane relative to the Earth’s equator varies between 30 and 44.5 degrees.
Middle Polar Orbit:
Middle Polarorbit is the orbit which passes through the poles and has an inclination of 90 degrees. It's a type of orbit which is used by communication satellites to communicate with people in different parts of the world. The satellite in middle polarorbit can be used for broadcasting as well as receiving signals, but it cannot be used for transmitting signals because its direction will always face towards Earth’s surface.
Application Insights:
The natural resources, security and defense, and communication industry are the major application sectors of the global polar satcom market. The natural resources sector is expected to dominate over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for satellite-based commodities in mining activities across various industries such as oil & gas, construction, forestry etc. Furthermore, growing investments by companies operating in these sectors are anticipated to boost growth over the coming years.
The middle Polar orbit provides coverage for approximately 40% of Earth¢â‚¬â„¢s surface while providing high data transmission speed and accuracy requirements at a relatively low cost than geosynchronous or equatorial orbits. Middle Polarorbit satellites have witnessed significant demand from customers within agriculture and water management applications due to their ability to provide highly accurate position information regarding weather monitoring equipment located on earth's surface which helps farmers with irrigation techniques as well as track soil moisture content remotely through radar technology thereby enhancing overall crop productivity significantly over recent years (decade).
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The regional growth is attributed to the increasing demand for high-speed data communication and connectivity across North America. Europe accounted for a significant share of global revenue in 2017, owing to the growing number of international business trips and investments by companies operating globally.
Asia Pacific is expected to be one of the fastest-growing regions over the forecast period owing to several initiatives undertaken by governments across this region for developing their telecommunication industry at a domestic level, thus creating opportunities forsatcom providers over next eight years.
The Asia Pacific satcom market has witnessed significant developments since 2015 as key players have been focusing more on emerging economies such as India and China due to lucrative opportunities offered by these countries along with other developing nations such as Indonesia.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for satellite-based broadband services, especially in the developing countries
- Proliferation of small satellites and increase in launches, which is driving down the cost of satellite ownership and operation
- Rapid growth in maritime traffic and increasing need for maritime safety and security
- Demand for earth observation data to support urban planning, agricultural monitoring, disaster management etc
- Growing number of telecommunication service providers offering managed services that include VSAT networks
