Product Definition:


Polyadipates are organic molecules that consist of chains of two or more adipic acid molecules. They are important because they can be used to make plastics and other synthetic materials.


Polyethylene Adipate:


Polyethylene adipate or PEA for short is a polymer with a molecular weight of about 3,900 and an amorphous solid state. It is produced by the polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of acid catalysts. Polyethylene adipate has applications as plasticizers, lubricants, additives for polyesters and epoxies/polyurethanes and as adhesives in hot melt products.


Polypropylene Adipate:


Polypropylene adipate is a white crystalline compound, which is soluble in water and ethanol. It has a molecular weight of 152.4 and an acid number of 4.6%. Polypropylene adipate can be used as an additive for polyadipates to improve their physical properties such as impact resistance, heat resistance, and surface hardness.


Application Insights:


The construction industry was the largest application segment in 2016, accounting for over 40% of the total market. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for polyadipates from various building materials such as roofing underlayment, wall coverings and insulation foams.


Polypropylene adipate is used extensively in paints & coatings due to its high water resistance and durability properties. It is also used in adhesives & sealants on account of its high temperature stability and low shrinkage properties when applied at temperatures above 200°C. Polybutylene adipate finds applications as binders for asphaltic concrete along with asphalt modifier ingredients such as organic peroxides or thiourea derivatives which are capable of binding oils & fuels during road surfacing operations.
