Market Overview:
The global polyethylene packaging market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for polyethylene packaging from various end-use industries, such as food, drinks, and electronic products. In addition, the growing demand for lightweight and durable packaging solutions is also contributing to the growth of this market. On the basis of type, high density polyethylene (HDPE) is expected to lead the global polyethylene packaging market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its properties such as high strength-to-weight ratio and resistance against chemicals and moisture.
Product Definition:
Polyethylene is a thermoplastic polymer made from ethylene and carbon monoxide. It has a high resistance to chemicals, oils and solvents. Polyethylene packaging is used to store or ship products that may be damaged by other types of packaging.
High Density Polystyrene (HDPE):
High-Density Polystyrene (HDPE) is a crystalline polymer, neutral in taste and odor. It has the highest compressive strength of any plastic and is resistant to most solvents. HDPE resins are manufactured by the addition of styrene to polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The resulting material has high resistance to chemicals, moisture, and heat; making it ideal for packaging applications ranging from food & beverages through electronics & automotive components.
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE):
LDPE is a low-density polyethylene resin that offers excellent clarity, processability, and tensile strength. It also has good impact strength and flex fatigue resistance. LDPE is widely used in flexible packaging applications such as food & beverage cans owing to its high flexibility at both room temperature & elevated temperatures along with excellent barrier properties against moisture.
The global LDPE market size was valued at USD 3.96 billion in 2016.
Application Insights:
The food application segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 40% in 2017. The packaging products used in this application include HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE. Polyethylene is one of the most widely used materials for food packaging as it meets all requirements of a safe container with high impact resistance & flexibility and low rates of permeability to gases & liquids.
Food containers and bottles made from polyethylene are lightweight which makes them ideal for use on long-distance transportations by road, rail or sea. Furthermore, they are produced at reasonable costs which makes them affordable compared to glass or metal alternatives available in the market place.
Electronic product packaging includes electronic components; cables; batteries; mobile phone chargers etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is also projected to be the fastest-growing market owing to increasing product demand from various end-use industries, such as food & beverages, consumer electronics and pharmaceuticals.
The growth of key economies in Asia Pacific including China, India and Japan on account of rapid industrialization along with supportive government policies aimed at promoting investments are some factors responsible for driving regional demand. Moreover, rising disposable income levels are anticipated to fuel polyethylene packaging consumption over the forecast period.
Europe accounted for a significant share of revenue in 2017 owing to high product penetration from several years ago due mainly HPDE products being used primarily for beverage packaging applications followed by electronic products such as laptops etc.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as food and beverage, personal care, and pharmaceuticals
- Rising disposable income of consumers in developing countries
- Technological advancements in polyethylene packaging products
- Growing popularity of lightweight and sustainable packaging solutions
- Proliferation of e-commerce platforms
