Market Overview:
The global polyvinyl alcohol market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for polyvinyl alcohol from various applications such as food packaging, paper manufacturing, construction, electronics, textile manufacturing and others. Polyvinyl alcohol is also used as a binder in various adhesive formulations owing to its excellent adhesion properties. Additionally, it exhibits good water resistance and hence is used in coatings and sealants for waterproofing applications. These factors are expected to drive the growth of the global polyvinyl alcohol market during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
Polyvinyl Alcohol is a water soluble polymer made from the monomer vinyl alcohol. It is used in textile printing, as a binder in paints and adhesives, and as a sizing agent for paper.
Fully Hydrolyzed:
Fully hydrolyzed is a process in which the chemical bond between water and polyvinyl alcohol molecule is broken. This results into highly soluble form of PVA, also known as cross-linked polymer or fully hydrolyzed PVA (FH). It has high molecular weight compared to partially hydrolyzed and native PVA, hence it’s used for various applications such as coating, adhesives & sealants, paper making chemicals and textile sizing agents.
Partially Hydrolyzed:
Partially hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol is a type of synthetic water-soluble polymer. It consists of an amorphous structure and has been characterized by X-ray as showing a high degree of branched chain amino acids. This partially hydrolyzed product is commercially available in two forms, namely, powder and liquid (brine).
The major applications include food packaging materials and textile industry. The demand for the product in the U.S.
Application Insights:
Polyvinyl alcohol finds application in food packaging, paper manufacturing, construction, textile manufacturing and electronics among other industries. In terms of revenue, food packaging dominated the global polyvinyl alcohol market with a share of 33.1% in 2017 owing to rising demand for flexible packaging from various end-use industries such as dairy & frozen foods and beverages and pharmaceuticals.
Paper manufacturing is expected to be the fastest growing application segment over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for high quality paper from both domestic as well as international markets. Increasing use of polyvinyl alcohol in newsprint production is also likely to contribute significantly towards growth over the coming years.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific was the largest regional market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for a major share of global production owing to availability of low-cost labor, raw materials, and efficient manufacturing facilities in countries such as China, India, Thailand, etc. Rising demand from end-use industries such as food packaging coupled with growing exports from developing economies is anticipated to drive polyvinyl alcohol demand over the forecast period.
Europe accounted for a significant share of revenue in 2017 owing to presence of well-established manufacturers along with high consumer disposable income levels across countries like Germany and U.K., which are major consumers of PVC products worldwide. North America emerged as second fastest growing regional market on account of rising consumption from end use industries including food packaging and construction coupled with increasing exports from U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from end-use industries such as construction, automotive, and packaging is expected to drive the growth of the polyvinyl alcohol market over the forecast period.
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using polyvinyl alcohol in various applications is another key factor that is anticipated to fuel market growth.
- Growing demand for biodegradable plastics owing to environmental concerns is projected to create new opportunities for players operating in the polyvinyl alcohol market over the next few years.
- Technological advancements in production processes are likely to boost demand for polyvinyl alcohol products in coming years.
