High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a new noninvasive treatment for prostate cancer that uses high-frequency sound waves to destroy tissues. The FDA has approved the use of HIFU devices for the treatment of localized prostate cancer, which means that manufacturers have approval to sell their products as medical devices. However, there are no guarantees about its effectiveness or safety in treating prostate cancer.
