Market Overview:
Rare earth concentrate is a type of mineral that contains rare earth elements. It is usually found in the form of oxides and sulfates. The global rare earth concentrate market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% during the forecast period 2018-2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for rare earth elements from various applications such as metallurgy, catalytic material, hydrogen storage materials, and others.
Product Definition:
A rare earth concentrate is a type of mineral deposit that contains significant concentrations of rare earth elements. These elements are used in a variety of high-tech applications, making the concentrate an important resource for the technology industry.
Cerium:
Cerium (III) oxide is a mineral, which occurs in nature as glacial acetic acid. Cerium(III) oxide has the chemical formula CeO3. It is a white solid and very hygroscopic with pore-like structure. The crystals are typically monoclinic, but often show polycristalline or even triclinic habits.
Lanthanum:
Lanthanum or La(3) is a chemical element which has the symbol Lan and atomic number 3. It is a soft, ductile, silvery-white metal that is highly corrosion resistant. Its compounds are used in various applications including rare earths (La+), ceramics, and electronics. Lanthanum shows excellent resistance to oxidation and reduction due to its electron configuration.
Application Insights:
Metallurgy application segment accounted for the largest share of over 30% in 2017. It is anticipated to be the fastest-growing segment over the forecast period owing to increasing demand for rare earth metals from various end-use industries including automotive, construction, and electronics. The expansion of manufacturing facilities in China and India coupled with growing demand from European countries will drive growth in metallurgy applications.
The permanent magnet materials segment is expected to grow at a significant rate during the forecast period owing to rising use of rare earth magnets in numerous appliances including refrigerators, hard disk drives, washing machines, and microwave ovens. Growing penetration of electronic products along with technological advancements such as smart packaging will propel industry growth further.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global rare earth concentrate market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. China accounted for a major share of global production owing to easy availability of raw materials and presence of large number of manufacturers in the country. In 2017, China produced nearly 90% total rare earth consumption amounting to about 6300 kilotons.
China has increased its exports from 50% in 2014 to 60-70% since 2015 mainly to Japan, India, South Korea, and Taiwan which are facing acute shortage problems due as they have discontinued their nuclear power plants construction projects after the Fukushima accident. Increasing exports from China has reduced domestic prices making it difficult for U.S.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand from the electronics and automotive industries
- Growing popularity of electric vehicles
- Stringent environmental regulations worldwide
- Rising demand for renewable energy sources
- Technological advancements in rare earth extraction and refining processes
