A roll to roll sputtering system is a type of vacuum deposition system that uses a rotating drum to deposit material onto a substrate. The drum is coated with an inert gas atmosphere and the substrate is placed over the top of the drum. The vacuum pressure inside the drum causes atoms and molecules in the gas to collide with each other, creating small particles called ions. These ions are then drawn towards and deposited on the surface of the substrate by capillary action.
