Market Overview:
The global rubber additive market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for tires and non-tires applications, and the growing awareness about the benefits of rubber additives. The global rubber additive market is segmented by type, application, and region. By type, the market is divided into antidegradants, accelerators, and other additives. Antidegradants are used to prevent or delay degradation of elastomers caused by environmental factors such as heat, ozone gas,, sunlight radiation etc., while accelerators are used to speed up vulcanization process during manufacturing of tires and other products made from rubber compounds. Other additives include tackifiers (agents that increase adhesion between surfaces), plasticizers (substances that increase flexibility), antioxidants (chemicals that retard oxidation), pigments etc.
Product Definition:
Rubber additive is a material that is mixed in with rubber to improve its properties. This can include making it more resistant to heat and chemicals, as well as making it more elastic. Rubber additives are important because they help to improve the overall quality and performance of rubber products.
Antidegradants:
Antidegradants are used in rubber additive industry to prevent the rubber from premature degradation. It is also known as anti-oxidant or retardant and it's function is similar to that of antioxidants present in fruits & vegetables. Rubber has a high content of iron oxide which on oxidation produces tiresome smoke, this property makes antidegradants necessary for the production of tires.
Accelerators:
Accelerators are chemicals that increase the speed of chemical reactions. They can be used to accelerate various processes in rubber additive manufacturing. The most common accelerators used in rubber additive manufacturing include nitric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic anhydride among others.
Application Insights:
Tires was the largest application segment in 2017 and is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The growing automotive industry, especially in emerging markets of China, India and Brazil is anticipated to have a positive impact on market growth. In addition, increasing disposable income among consumers in developing countries such as Vietnam is likely to propel demand for tires over the next eight years.
The non-tire applications include industrial rubber products which are used extensively across several end-use industries including construction materials; automotive; electronics; furniture & upholstery; footwear etc.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for approximately 60% of the total rubber production, 80% of global automotive production, and 50% of passenger cars produced worldwide. China is one of the largest producers as well as consumers in this region owing to its large domestic market along with easy access to natural resources.
The Asia Pacific was followed by North America which accounted for over 20% share in terms of revenue in 2017 on account high demand tire applications across various commercial vehicles including buses, trucks, and ambulances. Moreover, growing construction spending coupled with increasing number electric vehicle charging stations across major cities such as Los Angeles has further boosted product demand from 2018 to 2030 time frame.
Europe also witnessed significant growth on account high consumer preference towards premium tires especially for luxury vehicles such as BMWs.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for rubber additives from the automotive industry as a result of the increasing production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
- Rising demand for rubber additives in Asia Pacific due to the growth of end-user industries such as tire, footwear, and medical devices.
- Growing use of rubber additives in construction and engineering applications to improve durability and performance properties of rubbers.
- Increasing penetration of synthetic rubbers over natural rubbers, which is expected to drive the demand for rubber additives over the forecast period.
