Market Overview:
The global rubber oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The market growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for rubber oil in various applications such as rubber filling oil, rubber processing oil, and others. In terms of type, the petroleum series rubber oil segment is expected to hold a major share of the global market during the forecast period. This can be attributed to its properties such as high viscosity and low volatility which make it suitable for use in various applications.
Product Definition:
Rubber oil is a lubricant that is derived from crude oil or petroleum. It is used to lubricate machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Rubber oil can also be used as a fuel for heating or power generation.
Petroleum Series Rubber Oil:
Petroleum series rubber oil is a special type of synthetic rubber based on mineral oils. It has better resistance to heat and ozone than other types of synthetic or natural rubber. Petroleum series are produced by the fractional distillation process, which involves the separation of liquid hydrocarbons into various fractions depending upon their boiling ranges and different viscosities.
Pine Oil Series Rubber Oil:
Pine Oil Series Rubber Oil is a 100% natural rubber oil produced from pine tree. It has been used as an important source of vegetable oil and fatty acid for the manufacturing industry. The series consists of six products, which are sold under different brand names including ‘Puro’, ‘Widgi’, ‘Mallet’, etc.
The market size was valued at USD 648 million in 2016.
Application Insights:
Rubber processing oil dominated the global market in 2017, accounting for over 60.0% share of the overall revenue. The segment is expected to witness significant growth on account of increasing demand for tire manufacturing from various end-use industries including automotive, construction and transportation among others.
The other application segment includes engine oils and greases manufactured using natural or synthetic rubbers as a raw material component. Engine oils manufactured using natural rubber exhibit better resistance against oxidation compared with those made from petroleum-based products due to their higher inherent viscosity index (IV). However, high cost associated with them makes them unviable as a primary source of lubrication in modern machinery equipment compared to their petroleum-based counterparts which are still widely used owing to their affordability and availability across all major markets worldwide.
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global market in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region is home to some of the largest automobile manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia Motors Corporation and Suzuki. These companies are increasingly focusing on developing new types of vehicles that run on natural rubber for a prolonged period. This will further drive product demand in APAC during the forecast period.
Europe was estimated as second-largest regional segment followed by North America owing to high demand from end-use industries such as automotive and construction coupled with growing environmental concerns regarding carbon emissions caused during manufacturing processes of various products including tires.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for rubber oil in the automotive and transportation industries as a lubricant and fuel additive.
- Growing demand for rubber oil in the manufacturing of tires, hoses, belts, and other rubber products.
- Rising prices of crude oil, which is used to produce synthetic rubber oils.
- Technological advancements that have led to increased efficiency and production of synthetic rubber oils from crude oil sources.
