Market Overview:
The global satellite connectivity market is expected to grow from USD 9.5 billion in 2018 to USD 23.8 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 13.9% during the forecast period. The growth of the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for satellite-based communication and navigation services across the globe. Additionally, the increasing number of small satellites and miniaturization of components are also contributing to the growth of this market. However, stringent government regulations and high installation and maintenance costs are restraining the growth of this market. Based on type, VHF accounted for a major share ofthe global satellite connectivitymarket in 2017and is projectedto grow at a CAGRof 14%duringthe forecastperiod2018-2030 .
Product Definition:
Satellite Connectivity is a term used to describe the technology that allows devices to connect to the internet using satellites. The importance of satellite connectivity is that it provides a way for people and businesses to connect to the internet in remote areas where other forms of broadband access are not available.
VHF:
VHF is the radio frequency band between 30 MHz and 300 MHz. It covers the range of very high frequencies which are used for commercial purposes such as cell phones, two-way radios, walkie-talkies, etc. VHF has lower bandwidth than UHF but offers better transmission quality with less noise & interference.
UHF:
Ultra high frequency (UHF) is a radio frequency band that falls in the electromagnetic spectrum between 400 GHz to 860 GHz. UHF devices are generally used for wireless communication systems such as cordless phones, two-way radios, and home television among others. The usage of UHF is increasing in satellite connectivity market owing to the growing demand for mobile broadband services and next generation TV services such as Video on Demand (VoD), digital cable, and high-definition programming among others.
Application Insights:
The communication segment dominated the global satellite connectivity market in terms of revenue share in 2017. The growth can be attributed to the growing demand for mobile data services across all major regions. Moreover, increasing number of international voice and data roaming subscriptions is further driving the demand for globally connected satellites.
The earth observation segment is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to rising government initiatives and contracts for commercial use of space-based imagery worldwide. For instance, according to a contract signed between DigitalGlobe and Airbus Defense & Space, Airbus DS will provide launch services for at least 12 satellites with a total payload capacity of more than 3 tons each from 2018 to 2022. This contract was signed in response to an expression of interest issued by DigitalGlobe regarding procurement opportunities on commercially launched Earth Observation (EO) spacecrafts after 2016.
Regional Analysis:
The Asia Pacific regional market accounted for the largest revenue share in 2017 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to increasing demand for mobile connectivity, high penetration of smartphones, and rising investments in next-generation infrastructure. Moreover, growing demand for data services & broadband connectivity is further expected to drive industry growth over the forecast period.
North America region accounted for a significant revenue share in 2017 owing to early adoption of satellite communication technologies by companies operating in different sectors such as oil & gas, mining, utilities etc., which has led it being one of the most developed regions across all categories considered above. Furthermore North America’s space sector contributes significantly towards economic activity through spinoff benefits whereas space-related activities are also an important part of military operations thus making it one of the most developed regions across all categories considered above.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for satellite-based broadband services from the commercial and government sectors
- Proliferation of small satellites and low-cost terminals
- Development of high throughput satellite (HTS) technology
- Expansion of mobile broadband services
- Growing demand for managed network services
