Sheet moulding compound is a thermoset plastic that is used in the manufacture of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) parts. It is a resin matrix with glass fibers dispersed throughout, and it cures at elevated temperatures to form a rigid part. SMC has high strength and stiffness, good impact resistance, and good weathering properties. It can be formed into complex shapes using molds, and it can be painted or finished to match the desired appearance.


Polyester:


Polyester is a synthetic, heat-resistant fiber that can be processed like natural fibers. It has high tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Polyester resin is used in the manufacturing of SMC products to obtain dimensional stability, surface smoothness and improved processability at elevated temperatures.

Vinyl Ester:


Vinyl ester is a chemical compound of the class polyester and is produced from the reaction between diethylene glycol (DEG) and acrylonitrile. DEG acts as a catalyst in the process.


Application Insights:


Automotive was the largest application segment in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. SMC finds applications in automotive body panels, underbody space frame components, headliners and decking for recreational vehicles among others. The demand for these compounds is directly proportional to vehicle production as they are used to reduce overall weight of a car which improves fuel efficiency. Sheet metal thickness required depends upon class of vehicle - light cars require 1-2 mm thick material while heavy trucks 3-4 mm thick material is required.
