Market Overview:
The global ship watermaker market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the market can be attributed to factors such as increase in maritime trade, rise in demand for luxury yachts and boats, and increase in number of fishing boats. In terms of type, the market is segmented into semi-automatic, fully automatic, and other types. The fully automatic segment is expected to grow at a higher CAGR than other types during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. This can be attributed to its features such as low power consumption and easy installation which make it more popular among users. In terms of application, the market is segmented into yacht, fishing boat sailboat,, and other applications.
Product Definition:
A ship watermaker is a device used on boats and ships to convert salt water into fresh drinking water. It is important for a ship to have a watermaker because it provides the crew with potable (drinkable) freshwater, which is essential for drinking, cooking, and cleaning.
Semi-automatic:
Semi-automatic watermakers are used to produce potable (drinkable) water from seawater or other sources. They can produce either too much or not enough water for the given load and volume of cargo. The most important factor that differentiates a semi-automatic from a fully automatic unit is the user interface - in a semi-automatic unit, some manual intervention is required while in case of full automation it’s completely autonomous.
Fully Automatic:
Fully automatic watermakers are used to produce potable (drinkable) water on ships. They are most effective when used in conjunction with a desalination plant that uses solar or wind power for operation. The fully automatic system is designed to operate continuously without any manual intervention; it is capable of making multiple trips per day, thereby providing enough fresh water for the crew and passengers.
The ship’s complement can be as few as four people - two operators.
Application Insights:
Fishing boats accounted for the largest share in 2017 and are expected to continue their dominance over the forecast period. Fully automatic watermakers are generally used on fishing boats as they provide ease of use, continuous supply of fresh water, and improved reliability in comparison with semi-automatic counterparts. The demand for such equipment is particularly high in regions where freshwater resources are scarce or pollution levels increase the availability of fresh water supplies.
The yacht segment is also expected to witness considerable growth over the forecast period owing to rising disposable income among consumers globally. Fully automatic seawater desalination systems have been gaining popularity among luxury yacht owners as it provides a reliable source of drinking water without relying on local freshwater sources or taking extra crew members along with you while at sea. Such systems can be installed either onboard your vessel during its construction or later when it is docked at a port for maintenance purposes (if installed before).
Regional Analysis:
Asia Pacific dominated the global ship watermaker market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The region accounts for nearly 60% of the total yachts and fishing boats in the world. Furthermore, countries such as China, India, Singapore, Thailand are among top five manufacturing bases of recreational boats globally. These factors are anticipated to drive demand for ship watermakers over the forecast period.
Europe was estimated at USD X million in 2016 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of XX% from 2017 to 2030 owing to increasing R&D investments by various companies coupled with technological innovations across industries including marine sector. Moreover, stringent regulations on wastewater discharge by European governments have led manufacturers there adopt advanced technologies such as desalination plants that produce fresh water from seawater thereby driving demand for these machines over next eight years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for fresh water in the shipping industry
- Growing popularity of watermakers as a reliable source of fresh water on board ships
- Proliferation of new shipbuilding technologies and regulations supporting the use of onboard watermakers
- Rising awareness about the benefits of using onboard watermakers among shipowners and operators
- Advances in membrane technology that are making seawater desalination more efficient and cost-effective
