A detergent builder and water softener, sodium naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde is a white, crystalline solid. It is used in powdered laundry detergents to improve the cleaning power of soap by helping it dissolve quickly in water, and also to help keep calcium and magnesium from depositing on fabrics as they are washed, causing them to become stiff or rough.
