Lactonic sophorolipid is a new form of lipids that are found in the milk of several mammals. It has been identified as an important factor for maintaining the structural integrity and fluidity of blood cells. Lactonic sophorolipid also helps to maintain cholesterol levels in the blood, along with protecting against cell damage caused by oxidation and inflammation.


Acidic Sophorolipid:


Acidic sophorolipid is a type of surfactant which is produced by the fermentation of certain bacteria. It has been found to be effective in lowering the surface tension between two liquids or a solid and liquid, it can also be used as an emulsifier. Sophorolipids are commercially available in both synthetic and natural forms.


Application Insights:


The oil & gas application segment led the global sophorolipid market in 2017. The product is used as a drilling fluid and lubricant in the oil & gas industry. It is also used as an emulsifier, dispersant, and detergent for shale oil extraction from tight rocks. In addition, it finds applications as a biocompatible foaming agent for use in drilling muds that are predominantly made of clay minerals or silica-based materials.


Sophorolipids have been observed to be effective against several microorganisms including salmonella bacteria which cause food poisoning and staphylococcus bacteria that cause skin infections among others owing to their antimicrobial properties. Hence, they are being considered for use against diseases caused by multi-resistant microbes such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
