Soybean is a legume, also called as soyfood, produced by the soy plant (Glycine max). It is one of the most important vegetable crops in the world. Soy has been a major source of protein for vegetarian and vegan population around the globe since its discovery. The consumption of soymilks and other products made from soybeans has increased significantly over recent years owing to their high nutritional value.
Soy Meal (soy milk and soy protein concentrate):
Soy meal is a by-product obtained during the extraction of soybean oil. It consists of around 50% protein and has approximately double the amino acid content compared to other plant sources such as wheat, rice, and corn. Soy milk is obtained by extracting soybean milk and contains similar levels of omega-6 fatty acids as that in regular cow's milk.
Application Insights:
Feed was the largest application segment in 2017 and is projected to witness significant growth over the forecast period. The product is widely used as animal feed additive owing to its ability to promote weight gain in livestock. It also has a positive impact on dairy productivity, reduces somatic cell count, enhances feed efficiency and increases milk yield among other benefits.
Food was the second-largest application segment accounting for 30% of global market share in 2017 due largely to rising demand from emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil.
