Market Overview:
The global spike suppressors market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period from 2018 to 2030. The growth in this market can be attributed to the increasing demand for spike suppressors in communication, construction, electric power, transportation, oil and gas, and other applications. In terms of type, the power type segment is expected to lead the global spike suppressors market during the forecast period.
Product Definition:
A spike suppressor is an electronic component or circuit that reduces or eliminates the occurrence of spikes in an electrical signal. They are used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from being damaged by voltage spikes.
Power Type:
Power type is the classification of spike suppressors based on the method by which they function. There are two basic types of power-type systems, active and passive. Active power-type systems use an electronic circuit to reduce or eliminate spikes that may occur in a transmission line. These are usually used for long lines (more than 10 miles) where there is a significant chance of arcing between conductors due to high resistance or inductance present in the line.
Signal Type:
Signal type is used to design spike suppressors. It helps in identifying the optimum location of various components such as capacitors and resistors in a circuit. The signal types are classified into two categories, namely normal and abnormal signal types. The normal signals are those that appear at the input of an electronic device or system due to external loads; whereas, abnormal signals are generated internally within the device or system owing to some fault.
Application Insights:
The application segment is segregated as communication, construction, electric power, transportation and oil and gas. The construction segment accounted for the largest share in 2015 owing to rising applications in industrial buildings & infrastructure. Communication is expected to be the fastest-growing application over the forecast period owing to increasing demand from military & defense sector.
The electric power industry requires large number of spike suppressors for protection against electrical hazards during maintenance operations on transmission lines and distribution lines networks across various regions including North America, Europe and Asia Pacific etc. Electric power industry comprises of three major components that include generation plant (power plants), transmission line operators (T LO s) along with distribution network operators (D N O s). The D N O s are responsible for operating high voltage switchgear at a safe distance from human population areas where there may be high risk of electrocution hazard due to contact with overhead lines etc.
Regional Analysis:
North America dominated the global market in 2017. The growth of the regional market can be attributed to various factors such as increasing military operations, rise in terrorist activities, and need for high-quality products with enhanced performance. Moreover, presence of major players and increased spending on defense by governments are some other factors contributing to the growth of this regional market.
Asia Pacific is expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period owing to rising investments by governments in developing countries like China and India for communication infrastructure development along with growing demand from oil & gas exploration activities is anticipated to drive industry expansion over next eight years.
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for firearms from the law enforcement and military sectors
- Rising incidences of crime and terrorism
- Stringent gun control measures by governments across the world
- Growing popularity of shooting sports as a recreational activity
- Technological advancements in firearm suppressor designs and materials
