Market Overview:
The global spray polyurethanes foam (SPF) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2018 to 2030. The growth in the SPF market can be attributed to the increasing demand for energy-efficient and green buildings, rising awareness about the benefits of SPF insulation, and growing construction activities across the globe. The global SPF market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. On the basis of type, it is divided into open cell foam and closed cell foam.
Product Definition:
Spray Polyurethanes Foam (SPF) is a two-component foam system consisting of isocyanate and polyol components. When the two are mixed, they react and expand generating heat. The expanding foam insulation fills all gaps and voids in the substrate to which it is applied, creating an airtight thermal barrier with excellent sound absorption qualities.
Open Cell:
Open cell is a type of foam that contains many small cells or bubbles. These cells are completely open at both ends, hence the name. The size of these cells varies from 1/100th to 3/100ths of an inch and their density ranges from very light to medium depending upon the amount of carbon dioxide present in them during production.
Closed Cell:
Closed cell is also known as solid or non-ventilated foam. It has a density of greater than 1.5 lb/ft³ and less than or equal to 2.7 lb/ft³, depending on the manufacturer and application specifications.
Application Insights:
The demand for spray polyurethanes foam in wall insulation application accounted for a revenue share of over 40.0% in the global market in 2017. Rising consumer awareness regarding energy efficiency and improvement in building construction practices have resulted in an increased demand for SPF products such as insulation foams, which are increasingly being used to meet stringent energy standards set by regulatory bodies across the globe.
Spray polyurethane foams find applications not only as thermal and acoustic insulation but also as moisture barriers, which is expected to drive their consumption further. The rising importance of superior moisture barrier performance along with high durability and ease of installation has been encouraging users to opt for these products over other types of conventional fiberglass or cellulose-based materials that were previously used on a large scale within buildings owing to their low cost nature coupled with superior structural strength properties.
Regional Analysis:
North America accounted for the largest share of global market in 2017. The region is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period as well. This can be attributed to rising demand from industries, such as construction, automotive and transportation, consumer goods and packaging among others.
The growth of end-use industries in North America is anticipated to drive product demand further on account of technological advancements coupled with high disposable income of consumers and rapid urbanization resulting in increased spending on housing activities across countries like Canada and U.S., which will result into higher consumption levels for spray polyurethane foam products over the next eight years (2030).
Asia Pacific emerged as a promising regional market owing to increasing infrastructure development activities along with growing real estate sector especially in China, India, Indonesia among other Southeast Asian countries are projected boost industry expansion at a steady CAGR from 2018 till 2030 (2029).
Growth Factors:
- Increasing demand for energy-efficient and green buildings: The global market for spray polyurethanes foam is expected to benefit from the increasing demand for energy-efficient and green buildings. SPF helps in improving the insulation properties of a building, which in turn reduces the amount of energy required to heat or cool the building, thus making it more energy efficient.
- Rising construction spending in emerging economies: The global construction spending is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5% during 2016-2021, with majority of this growth coming from emerging economies such as China, India, and Brazil. This would create opportunities for spray polyurethanes foam manufacturers as well since SPF is extensively used in construction applications such as roofing, insulation, and waterproofing.
- Growing popularity of SPF among homeowners: Homeowners are increasingly becoming aware about the benefits offered by SPF and its ability to improve comfort levels while reducing monthly utility bills. This has led to an increase in demand for SPF products among homeowners across different regions worldwide.
